III. Answer the questions below:

A. Explain, what are the Routers and Switches in the diagram below:

1. Routers: Routers are devices used to connect multiple networks together and facilitate communication
between them. They analyze the destination address of incoming data packets and determine the best path
for the packets to reach their intended destination.

2. Switches: Switches are networking devices that enable devices within a network to communicate with
each other. They forward data packets between devices within the same network based on the MAC
addresses of the devices. Switches help create a local area network (LAN) by providing multiple ports for
connecting devices.

3. POWER UNITS: These are units responsible for providing power to the various components in the
system.

4. AC: AC stands for Alternating Current, which refers to the type of electrical power used in many
electrical systems.

5. DC: DC stands for Direct Current, which refers to the type of electrical power used in many electronic
devices and systems.

6. ETHERNET COMMUNICATION UNIT: This unit facilitates communication using the Ethernet
protocol, which is a widely used standard for wired network communication.

7. MODBUS TCP: MODBUS TCP is a communication protocol commonly used in industrial automation.
It allows devices to exchange data over Ethernet using the MODBUS protocol.

8. HARDWIRED SIGNALS: Hardwired signals refer to physical connections or wiring used to transmit
signals between different components or devices.

9. POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM/MAIN SWITCHBOARD/PROPULSION CONTROL

SYSTEM: These components are responsible for managing and controlling the power distribution and
propulsion systems in the given system.

10. SHIP ALARM and MONITORING SYSTEM: This system monitors and alerts for any alarms or
abnormal conditions on the ship.

11. EXTERNAL ENGINE MOUNTED CABINETS: These cabinets house control equipment and
components that are externally mounted on the engine.

12. TERMINALS: Terminals refer to points or connections where devices or components can be connected
or terminated.

13. PDM: PDM stands for Power Distribution Module, which is responsible for distributing power to
different electrical components or systems.

2
14. ESM: ESM stands for Engine Safety Module, which is responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safe
operation of the engine.

15. LDU: LDU stands for Local Display Unit, which provides a localized interface for displaying and
interacting with the engine parameters and data.

16. LCP: LCP stands for Local Control Panel, which provides a localized interface for controlling and
managing the engine.

17. MCM: MCM stands for Motor Control Module, which is responsible for controlling and managing
electric motors.

18. DUAL CAN: Dual CAN refers to a redundant or backup Controller Area Network (CAN) communication
system. CAN is a bus-based communication protocol widely used in automotive and industrial
applications.

19. IOM: IOM stands for Input/Output Module, which provides input/output interfaces for connecting
external devices to the control system.

20. DUAL 24VDC: Dual 24VDC refers to a redundant or backup power supply system operating at 24 volts
DC.

21. SAFETY SENSORS and SOLENOID VALVES: These sensors and valves are responsible for
monitoring and controlling safety-related functions and processes in the system.

B. Explain how the network connections ( the CAN and Modbus TCP ) works
and communicate with each control, SCADA and other control devices in the
network diagrams of the Engine as shown below:
1. CAN (Controller Area Network): CAN is a communication protocol commonly used in automotive and
industrial applications. It allows devices within the network to communicate and exchange data. In the
context of the Engine network, CAN would enable communication between the Engine Instrumentation,
IO/Control Modules, LDU (Local Display Unit), and other devices or systems connected to the CAN
bus.

2. Modbus TCP: Modbus TCP is a communication protocol that allows Modbus devices to exchange data
via Ethernet. Modbus TCP would enable communication between the Engine Instrumentation, IO/Control
Modules, LDU, WECS (Wind Energy Conversion System) Main Cabinets, and other devices or systems
that support Modbus TCP communication in the provided network diagram.
These network connections allow the interchange of control signals, sensor data, and other important
information between the many components and systems in the engine configuration, facilitating coordinated
operation and monitoring of the engine's performance.
