Critical Question for Discussion

1. Which among the thoughts, do you find relatable to you?
The most relatable thing for me is the Confucian quote, "Don't do to others what you
don't want others to do to you."
This is a golden rule: if you don't want it done to you, don't do it to others, especially
in behavior. Change it; if there is no change, you yourself will be affected, and you
yourself will lose.
There are people who, when you return or make them feel their bad behavior, are still
angry and victimized.
If you are respected, I respect you too.If you are loved, learn to love too.If you are
appreciated, learn to appreciate others too.If you are not fooled, don't be fooled. If
you're serious, don't play around.If you don't love it, don't try it.
Not all the time, you will be able to endure someone. Life is fun; be content with what
you have and with those who will accompany you from sinking to rising. There is no
such thing as a perfect person or perfect partner in life; just learn to be content, love,
appreciate, and respect others. It's better to live with peace of mind and not cheat
others.
2. Based on your observation and experiences, give three manifestations of
individualistic culture among Filipinos.
Individualistic culture in the Philippines may manifest in several ways, including:
1. Prioritizing personal interests: Individualistic Filipinos may prioritize their
interests over the group's consensus. This can be seen and they pursue personal
goals and aspirations, even if it goes against the norms and values of their
immediate family or community.
2. Challenging traditional family structures: In the past, Filipino family structures
were hierarchical, where respect was given to the eldest family members. Now,
with a more individualistic culture, younger members may challenge traditional
family values and make decisions for themselves.
3. Being more competitive: Individualistic Filipinos may be more competitive and
ambitious in their personal and professional lives. They aim to distinguish
themselves from others and achieve success, which is often measured by career
achievements and material possessions. This contrasts significantly with
collectivistic Filipino values that prioritize harmony, social relationships, and
shared responsibility.
3. Based on your observation and experiences, give three manifestations of
collectivist culture among Filipinos.
The Philippines is known to have a collectivistic culture where the needs of the group
are prioritized over the needs of the individual. However, there are still some
manifestations of individualistic culture among Filipinos. Here are three examples
1. Personal Ambition: Despite the collectivistic nature of the culture, Filipinos also
value personal ambition and strive for personal success. This is evident in the
popularity of professions like entrepreneurship, entertainment, and sports.
2. Family Independence: While Filipinos place a high value on family, there is also a
movement towards individual family members being independent and making
their own decisions. It is not uncommon for younger generations to move out of
their parent's homes and live on their own, pursuing their own goals and careers.
3. Self-Expression: Filipinos also value self-expression and creative individuality.
This can be seen in the popularity of music, art, and fashion trends that are
unique and expressive of individual style personality.
