Assignment 1: Group Project

“Online Ordering System for Catering Industry”

Scenario

You are a team of business analysts of a catering group. The company has been severely
impacted by COVID-19 pandemic and stringent social distancing policies imposed by the
government. The senior management proposes introducing an online ordering system to cope
with the challenging business environment. Your team is required to prepare a business
proposal with solutions to the following questions.
• What information systems / information technologies would be used to support the new
initiative?
• What payment methods would be adopted?
• How to improve customer satisfaction?

Objectives

• To conduct research on relevant information systems and technologies relating to the


given scenario in business environments.
• To think critically and creatively in the comparison and evaluation of various
information systems and technologies with respect to their features and applications with
the aim of producing appropriate recommendations satisfying the requirements of the
given scenario.
• To communicate and present clearly, concisely, effectively and attractively your
proposal using office tools Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint.
• To manage your group assignment efficiently and effectively in team work within the
given schedule.

Project Requirements

1. Group Member List


1.1. Students are free to form their own group with 5 to 6 members, all from the same
lecture class with one member being the group leader.
1.2. Group leader should send group members’ information to subject lecturer by
completing the member list submission form.

2. Business Proposal Report


2.1. Each group has to prepare a business proposal file in Microsoft Word format (.docx)
and a presentation file in Microsoft PowerPoint format (.pptx). Both files should
include a cover page with the following details:

− Title of the proposal;


− Student FULL name (in a way that appears in the attendance list), student ID
number, class number and tutorial group of all group members; with the group
leader being highlighted (such as by ***).

2.2. The business proposal should be concise and precise, with a maximum of 10 pages
excluding cover page, table of contents and references, and the file size should not
exceed 20 MB.

2.3. The recommended format settings of the proposal are given below:
o Page: A4 size
o Margin: 1 inch on top, bottom, left, and right
o Font: Times New Roman or Arial, 12-point font size
o Spacing: 1.5 line spacing
o Appropriate illustrations with pictures, charts or tables

2.4. Your proposal should contain the following major sections:
 Table of Content – A list of major headings of your proposal with page numbers.

 Introduction – The background information of this proposal should be reported,


together with any possible assumptions which may subsequently affect your decision
and recommendations; e.g. type and size of your organization, information systems
currently used, business operations and services involved, etc. You should also define
clearly the scope and the problem of your project in this section.
 Findings – Identification of the appropriate information systems and technologies
based on the given scenario should be reported in this section. For the sake of learning
purpose, your group should identify / evaluate as many appropriate information
systems and technologies as possible for the organization.
(Hint: You should also try to apply various concepts and knowledge learned in the
lecture classes as far as possible.)
 Explanation and justification of recommendations – Descriptions of the unique
features / functions of the recommended information systems and technologies, and
explanation on how they can help the organization to achieve long-term competitive
advantages and sustain continue growth of the business.
 Conclusions – Summary of the recommended information systems and technologies
for the organization. Application examples of the information systems and
technologies recommended can be quoted to help for illustration purposes.
The following sections are to be written from student’s perspective.
 Work distribution
 References – List of reference sources (e.g. Web sites, textbook chapters, etc.)
preferably in APA style.

3. PowerPoint Presentation
3.1. Although real presentation is not required, your group should prepare a PowerPoint
presentation file (in .pptx format) as if you would use it to give a presentation in front
of the senior management of the organization.
3.2. It will be a summary of your proposal with a maximum of 25 slides excluding the
cover & table of content slides; the overall file size should not exceed 50 MB.

4. Peer-to-peer Evaluation Form


4.1. Finally, each group member (including group leader) must also submit the completed
Peer Evaluation Form through Moodle on or before the deadline.

Grading Criteria

I. Group components (75%)

Teamwork:
[1] Effective communication and cooperation of the team
[2] Good planning and time management skills
Main content of the Proposal:
[1] Conformance to the specifications (e.g. number of pages & sections)
[2] Formatting techniques (e.g. page / section breaks, tabs, bullets, header / footer)
[3] Text & Image / Graphics treatment (e.g. font / density of text, layout of content)
[4] Use of Tables / Charts for organization of information
[5] Identification, explanation and justification of recommendations
[6] Overall structure of the proposal (e.g. style consistency, page numbering, use of
language, reasoning, content clarity, etc.)
[7] The handling of reference works
Main content of the Presentation Slides:
[1] Conformance to the specifications (e.g. number of slides & sections)
[2] Formatting techniques (e.g. master slide, bullets, etc.)
[3] Textual effect & Image / Graphics treatment (e.g. word arts, background, etc.)
[4] Use of Tables / Charts for organization of information
[5] Animation / Multimedia treatment (e.g. slide transition, visual / audio effects)
[6] Overall flow of the presentation (e.g. style consistency, page numbering, use of
language, reasoning, content clarity, etc.)

II. Individual components (25%)

[3] Peer rating by group members

Important Points

 Plagiarism will be penalized severely. Marks will be deducted for assignments that are
plagiarized in whole or in part, regardless of the sources. Please note that your submitted
work may be checked by Turnitin, a plagiarism detection software, during submission.
 10% of the marks will be deducted for each day of delay in submission.
