Rural Development in Nepal

# Background of the Issues


Development is a positive change in social and physical life of
the people. The term development has been in use since vert
long period in the history. Normally, after the second world war
in 1945AD the development discourse of the world come to be
changed. Because of the world war the economic condition of
the countries in the world was turn to the huge crisis who
involved in the war directly or indirectly. Some of the countries
because very powerful in term of economy and some of them
were weakened because of the war. The term development was
for the first time coned by former president of America Harry
Truman to indicate the development and underdeveloped
countries. In the process of development the concept of
modernization was a great watershed in the world where the rich
and developed countries were committed to assist
underdeveloped nation for their economic betterment.

Nepal is an undeveloped landlocked agricultural country where


62% of total population are involved in the agriculture as the
main source of income.Geographically Nepal is divided into
three regions including mountain, hilly and terai region with
different natural and physical setting. Rural development is the
change in underdeveloped nation for their economic betterment
and daily life of the rural poor rural development is a plan and
strategy of the nation to change the holistic development of rural
population. There are different aspects to charge the holistic
development and the lifestyle of rural populations. According to
Acharya(2004), every people of the world want to live in
freedom with development, they wish to change their lives with
self-respect, self identify and self-dignity.
After the second world war, the rural condition of the countries
had been changed. Many countries of the world took the support
from the first world and second world in technology, economy
and other assistance. The local traditional rule, social norms and
values are replaced by modern technology, norms values and
belief systems. Normally in the rural areas people started to
harvested the cash crops replacing traditional crops system. The
plough and spade were replaced by tractors which helped to
increase the productivity and growth in the rural area. The
environment has been changed and the road transportation
facility increased for the easy access of production of the rural
area. Meanwhile in Nepal, the rural area started to change after
the establishment of federal republican democracy which
promulgated new constitution rural development is a strategy to
enable a specific group of people. It involves helping the poorest
among these who seek a livelihood in the rural area to demand
and control more of the benefits of rural development.The group
include small scale farmers, tenants and the landless (chamber
1983 : 147)when the state makes the important decision and
planning to change the life to these small groups, tenants and
landless people of the rural area, ultimately the life and rural
development will achieve.

# Significance of the Issue


Rural development is of very important issue today in term of
Development without the development and change in national
economy is impossible. So, there are different dimensions to
achieve the rural development in Nepal. It has described very
important aspects of development and its current situation of
Nepalese rural development process. As a student of rural
development, we must be acknowledged about the different
dimensions of development in rural area.
