PROCEDURE
A. Preparation

Preliminary Activities and Checking of assignments.

B. Motivation

Do you why surveys are conducted? What is the importance of surveys?

C. Presentation

Statistics is the science of collecting, classifying, organizing, summarizing/presenting, analyzing, and

interpreting data in order to draw conclusions or make decisions.

D. Discussion/ Abstraction

Kinds of Statistics:
1. Descriptive Statistics- concerned with describing the properties and characteristics of a set of
data. ( measures of central tendency, variability/dispersion and position)
2. Inferential Statistics- concerned with the analysis of a sample data leading to predictions,
inferences, interpretation, or conclusion about the entire population. (test of difference, relationship or
association)
Data- consist of information coming from observations, counts, measurements or responses.
Population- all members of a defined group that we are studying
Sample- representatives or portion of the population
Population is to census; sample is to survey

Importance of Statistics:

1. Statistics helps in providing a better understanding and exact description of a phenomenon of

nature.
2. Statistics helps in proper and efficient planning of a statistical inquiry in any field of study.
3. Statistics helps in collecting an appropriate quantitative data.
4. Statistics helps in presenting complex data in a suitable tabular, diagrammatic and graphic form for
an easy and clear comprehension of the data.
5. Statistics helps in understanding the nature and pattern of variability of a phenomenon through
quantitative observations.
6. Statistics helps in drawing valid inference, along with a measure of their reliability about the
population parameters from the sample data.

E. Exercises

Which of the following terms are connected with sample or population?

1. Universe
2. Group measure called statistics
3. Application of probability concepts
4. Inspection of manufactured items
5. Selection of items at random

F. Generalization

Explain the difference between population and sample.

G. Application

Give two reasons why data is collected and analyzed from a sample rather than a population.

H. Evaluation

Direction: Write true if the statement is correct and false if it is wrong.

1. A sample is a subset of a population.
2. Statistics helps validate a certain information.
3. Inferential statistics involves using a population to draw a conclusion about a corresponding
sample.
4. Meaningful interpretation of data requires a sound knowledge of statistics.

I. Agreement/ Assignment.

Study on the importance of statistics.
