Ethico-Legal Considerations and Issues in the Care of Sick

Mother and Child

ACTIVITY:
Instruction: Pick 1 of the MCN's ethical problems and challenges. Look up a study on the
topic and discuss the moral dilemmas that result from the circumstance.

ABORTION
For most women, abortion presents an ethical conundrum for a variety of reasons.
Religious convictions and health issues are simply reconciled by reason and necessity.
While other situations, including births brought on by illegal activity, are more
frequently discussed and seen as an ethical conundrum. It is simple to understand
why abortion is a contentious issue. The woman is left with the dilemma of
determining when it is appropriate to prolong or end that life cycle in any debate
that entails ending a life, especially one that never begged to be conceived in the
first place. The devout hold that God alone should be trusted with such a significant
judgment. But, as a result of abortion, both women and men have assumed the role
of God, deciding who and when should live even before that person really enters the
world.

“Ethical Dilemma: Choice of Abortion Should Only Affect the Individual in Position”

An ethical dilemma is when the best course of action is unclear, and when there are
adequate and compelling moral reasons supporting each position (Keatings, 2020).
There have been ethical dilemmas in various areas of topics, the field, biomedical
ethics is associated with healthcare ethics and dilemmas. The topic of abortion has
and is currently known as an ethical dilemma. The medical definition for abortion is
the premature exit of the products of conception; the fetus, fetal membranes, and
placenta from the uterus (Shiel, 2018). In other words, it’s the termination of
pregnancy. Controversies on abortion are either pro-choice or pro-life, I am on the
side of pro-choice with supporting women’s rights. I believe women should have the
right to have access to abortion services globally without any penalty, they should be
entitled to make a decision that would affect their life without societies judgement.
The Canadian Justice System supports the rights of abortion to a certain extent.
However, I still believe with almost every topic some boundaries cannot be crossed
and therefore in some situations, I am against abortions, such as; gender induced
abortion, and depending on gestational age. The ethical theory, utilitarianism is a
theory that doesn’t have an “absolute principle, moral codes, duties or rules”
(Keatings, 2020). It is a theory that believes that the action will have more benefits
over consequences. Utilitarian’s belief regarding abortion is, pro-choice. Factors such
as financial stability for the mother, health of the mother, health of the fetus, etc. are
all considered.

Abortion is a procedure that, in my opinion, ought to be recognized by the law as a

woman's fundamental right. Instead of promoting abortion as a procedure that
women should have like plastic surgery, I favor discussing it with women as a choice
they can make if they find themselves in a circumstance that necessitates it. The
majority of women who have abortions don't really know anything about them
because the subject is taboo in society. A transparent conversation will aid in
government regulation of abortion facilities and assist women in making educated
decisions. This will result in more candid dialogues and greater acceptance of
abortions for what they are—a method of resolving an issue that, for the majority of
women, has the potential to change their lives.

When it comes to abortion, there is no right or wrong response, partly because every
abortion case has different circumstances. No woman should be stigmatized
because she underwent the operation. It is only an ethical conundrum because
society rejects the advantages of abortion in women's lives. Most ladies will no longer
be in a pickle once the advantages are made more evident.
