PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the results, the analysis and interpretation of data

gathered from the answers to the questionnaires distributed to the field. The said data

were presented in tabular form in accordance with the specific questions posited on the

statement of the problem.

I. Perception of Selected Senior High School Students on Online Grammar

Checkers

1.1 Sentence Structure. Constructing a clear and concise sentence is crucial in

conveying the author’s intended message to the reader. Online grammar checkers, as

one of the online tools students used in enhancing their writing abilities can greatly

helps in improving the sentence structure in their written composition

Table 1.1 shows the perception of Senior High School students on the online

grammar checkers in terms of sentence structure.

The items 1-5 have a weighted mean ranging from 3.23-3.49 with the verbal

interpretation of agree. Based on the table, the second item which online grammar

checker helps in arranging misplaced or missing modifiers got the highest weighted

mean of 3.49 and has been on the first rank. It is followed by the fifth item that implies

online grammar checker as a tool in correcting improperly combined independent

clauses in their writing with the weighted mean of 3.30 and has been on the second

rank. The first item indicates that online grammar checkers provide appropriate

transitional words in the written composition got 3.28 as its weighted mean is on the
third rank. Hence, students perceive online grammar checker as a helpful tool in

correcting modifiers to a proper place in the sentence.

The lowest in the rank are the third and fourth item with a weighted mean of 3.23

with the verbal interpretation of agree in which it eliminates unnecessary term and

correct the punctuation on their written composition. This implies that online grammar

checkers is moderately useful in correcting the writing errors specifically in the terms

and punctuation used in the sentence.

Moreover, the composite mean of the items is 3.31 with the verbal interpretation

of agree. This means that the students perceived that online grammar checkers greatly

helps them in providing appropriate and proper sentence in their written composition.

In relation with this, Farida et al., (2019) stated that online grammar checkers

promote proper sentence construction, exact grammatical usage, and appropriate

punctuation. They affirmed online grammar checkers help students write more

accurately in English which can enhance the writing abilities. Since some students

provides disorganized composition, their readers struggle and understanding the

content as well as the meaning of this composition. Improper sentence structure affect

the clarity of ideas presented in the writings which change the meaning being conveyed.

That is why it is advisable to use online grammar checkers in checking sentence

structure.

1.2 Grammar Accuracy. Proper grammar is necessary for ensuring credibility,

readability, and clarity in a written composition. Constructing a grammatically correct

piece of writing helps in an effective conveyance of messages that the author wants to

deliver.

Table 1.2 shows the perception of the senior high school students on the online

grammar checkers in terms of grammar accuracy. Students have different perceptions

on the usefulness of online grammar checkers in producing a grammatically correct

piece of writing.

The fourth item has a weighted mean of 3.54 which states that online grammar

checker ensures the parallel structure in work with a verbal interpretation of strongly

agree and got the first rank. It is followed by the fifth item which indicates that online
grammar checker helps in receiving writing for grammar errors got a weighted mean of

3.46 which is said to be agree and ranked as second. While the third in the rank got a

weighted mean of 3.33 which implies that online grammar checker reviews the subject

and verb tenses in written composition. The results of the survey conducted indicate

that online grammar checkers has been perceived by the students as helpful in terms of

checking spelling, grammar, and verb tenses in their written composition.

On the other hand, the lowest in the rank is the third item with a weighted mean

of 3.26 having a verbal interpretation of agree in which it ensures the parallel structure

in their written composition. The first item which states that online grammar checker

reviews subject and verb agreement got a weighted mean of 3.28 with a verbal

interpretation of agree and is the second to the last in rank. These results indicate that

students perceived online grammar checkers as less useful in reviewing the subject and

verb agreement as well as in ensuring the parallel structure in their written composition.

All in all, the composite mean of the items is 3.314 with a verbal interpretation of

agree which indicates that senior high school students perceived online grammar

checkers as useful in terms of producing a grammatically accurate piece of writing.

These tools appear to be effective in reviewing subject and verb agreement, verb

tenses, cohesion, spelling, and grammar errors.

Relatively, Perdana (2019), online grammar checkers are online tools that checks

for the spelling, punctuation, and grammar in a written composition. This tool allows for

the correction of problems and mistakes encountered by the students in English writing.

Since students commonly fail to consider the writing mechanics in their composition,

they have trouble in conveying the messages they want to express. This hinders them
not only in terms of expressing themselves, but as well as in communicating effectively

with others. Therefore, online grammar checkers are useful in producing an error-free

composition.

1.3 Word Choice. Word choice in writing is the use of clear and concise

language that provides information. Online grammar checker can help students

compose a well-written sentences with a proper word choice.

 In the items 1-5 have a weighted mean ranging from 3.26 - 3.46 with a verbal

rank. This means the senior high school students most purpose of using online

appropriate conjunctions.

The lowest in the rank with the same weighted mean got 3.26. Interpretation as

agree states that online grammar checker corrects the misused word in written

composition, eliminates overused word and provides appropriate terms when it comes

to idioms. These indicates that students agreed that online grammar checkers provide

accurate words in writing.

To sum up, the composite mean of the items is 3.31 with a verbal Interpretation of

agree. Which indicate that senior high school students perceived online grammar

checkers as helpful tool in terms of word choice. These tools appeared and precise

words used in their writing.

According to Djuraskovic (2022) cited that online grammar checkers have various

features that may help students in their writing. Aside from correcting the mistakes in a

written composition, online grammar checkers also provide suggestions and alternative

terms and phrases for a better structure of the text. Through this, Students are able to

improve the power and clarity of them of their words in their English writing. Online

grammar checker is providing better terms, provides appropriate conjunctions, correct

the misused word in written composition and it provides terms when it comes to idioms.

This why online grammar checker is available in terms of word choice.

Online Grammar Checker. It is a useful tool used by the students to check the

grammatical mistakes and suggest corrections. Besides, students have various reasons

why they used online grammar checker for their schoolwork.

 The table 2 shows the reasons why students use online grammar checker. The

items 1-10 have a weighted mean ranging from 3.62-3.28 with a verbal interpretation of

Strongly Agree and agree. The second item which states that online grammar checker

checks grammatical errors in writing got the highest weighted mean of 3.62 with a

verbal interpretation of Strongly Agree. Three items obtained the same weighted mean

of 3.54 with a verbal interpretation of Strongly Agree which online grammar checker

saves time in proof reading work, corrects spelling and typographical error and revise

work. The tenth item which online grammar checker is convenient because it can

improve written composition in a click got 3.46 as it’s weighted mean is on the third

rank. It implies that online grammar checker is helpful because it lessen the mistakes of

the students and create an error free in writing.

The eighth on the rank is the fourth item which states that online grammar

checker helps finish work in a short period of time got 3.33 as its weighted mean

interpreted as Agree. It is followed by the seventh item which it corrects the punctuation

mark used in work with a weighted mean of 3.31 ranked as eight. The sixth item

indicates that online grammar checker provides accessible service because it is free got

3.28 as its weighted mean interpreted as Agree is on the lowest rank. Since online

grammar checker is free, it became easy for the students to have it and used it.

To sum up, the composite mean of the items is 3.45 with a verbal interpretation

of Agree. It means that online grammar checker enables the students to improve their

English writing through checking their grammatical errors and providing accurate

message in writing.
 Moreover, Cotos (2011) stated that online grammar checker is an essential tool

in writing process of students because it improves their writing skills by correcting

mistakes in writing. Revision of work is accessible because it is free. It is convenient to

use because students can finish their work in a short period of time. It also encourages

students to enhance their writing skills through identifying their grammatical error.

Students can easily create a written composition with a proper grammar usage that is

useful for their work.

Writing. Writing is a crucial tool that enables us to communicate our ideas and

thoughts with others. With this, students used online grammar checkers in their writing

which have a various impact to their English writing skills

Table 3 shows the effect of online grammar checkers on English writing skills

of the selected Senior high school students. The items 1-3 have a weighted mean

ranging 3.49-3.41 with a verbal Interpretation of Agree.

 Based on the result, the second and third item which are online grammar

checker allows the students to be knowledgeable on the English language and it’s

provides clarity of word in their English writing got the same and highest weighted mean

3.49. It is followed by the fourth and sixth item which enables the students to write a

precise and well written text and it’s improving the organization of ideas in their works

with the same weighted mean 3.44. While the item eight indicates that online grammar

checkers enables the students to identify the common mistakes that they commit in

writing got the weighted mean 3.41 which is on the third rank. This result indicates that

online grammar checkers effect positively on the English writing skills of the selected

Senior high school students.

Whereas the third lowest in the rank is in the nine item with a weighted mean

of 3.28 with a verbal Interpretation of Agree in which it express their ideas in writing

through direct and simple way. It is followed by the second lowest in the rank which are

the first and fifth item enables them to compose a text without any English writing

language and affects their vocabulary with the same weighted mean 3.26. Whereas the

tenth item indicates that online grammar checkers affects them to maintain a sense of

flow and unity of ideas in their writing got 3.23 as it’s weighted mean or in the first rank.

Hence online grammar checkers indicates them to maintain the unity of ideas in their

writing.

Moreover, the composite mean of the items is 3.37 with a verbal Interpretation

of Agree. Which means senior high school students perceived online grammar checkers

positively regarding the effects of online grammar checkers on their English writing

skills.
 According to Parra and Calero (2019) stated that using online grammar

checks helps the students write better. The results implied that with the help of grammar

checkers, it can improve text accuracy, which could improve students writing skills and

also it’s provides clarity of word, improves the organization of ideas and it’s main a

sense of flow and unity of ideas in their writing.
