BIRTH NAME: PEDRO RODRIGUEZ CERVERA

Pedro Rodríguez Cervera (Valencia, 1895 Barcelona, february

2, 1990) Was a con temporary Spanish fashion designer and
friend of Balenciaga, who created his own haute couture
house in Barcelona in 1919, although success he arrived in
1929, with the Barcelona international exhibition, becoming
one of the great creators of Spanish fashion of the 20 th
century.
He was born into a humble Family from Valencia. Fatherless,
he moued to Barcelona with his Family when he was only two
years old. He started in the world of fashion when he began
working as a tailor’s apprentice.
In 1919, he opened the “Pedro Rodríguez sewing house” with
his wife, Anna María. Although from the outset his clietele
included Barcelona´s high society, it was not until the
Barcelona internacional exposition of 1929, when he really
achieved sucess, thanks to proposals inspired by art Deco.

His success was interrupted by the outbreak of the civil war,

which forced him to live in exile and to be separated from his
Family. He settled in Paris and came into contact with the
great designers of the day. He received several offers to
establish his fashion house in cities like London or New york.
However, despite the situation, he decided to return to Spain
and reunite with his Family.
In 1939 he opened another sewing house in san Sebastián,
where he stayed until franco’s arrival in Barcelona, which
gave him the opportunity to start anew in the Catalán capital.
Son after, he also opened a house in madud, thus controlling
the three most important geographical points in spanish
fashion.

Although the 1940 were difficut, he opened several

boutiques throughout Spain. During this decade he founded
the haute couture cooperative, of which he was president for
more than thirty years, and thanks to which Spanish fashion
spread throughout Europe and America.
Little by Little, haute couture languished, and although Pedro
Rodriguez remained active until 1979, he never fullg adapted
to hasty fashion.
