Pedro Rodríguez Cervera (Valencia, 1895 Barcelona, february
2, 1990) Was a con temporary Spanish fashion designer and friend of Balenciaga, who created his own haute couture house in Barcelona in 1919, although success he arrived in 1929, with the Barcelona international exhibition, becoming one of the great creators of Spanish fashion of the 20 th century. He was born into a humble Family from Valencia. Fatherless, he moued to Barcelona with his Family when he was only two years old. He started in the world of fashion when he began working as a tailor’s apprentice. In 1919, he opened the “Pedro Rodríguez sewing house” with his wife, Anna María. Although from the outset his clietele included Barcelona´s high society, it was not until the Barcelona internacional exposition of 1929, when he really achieved sucess, thanks to proposals inspired by art Deco.
His success was interrupted by the outbreak of the civil war,
which forced him to live in exile and to be separated from his Family. He settled in Paris and came into contact with the great designers of the day. He received several offers to establish his fashion house in cities like London or New york. However, despite the situation, he decided to return to Spain and reunite with his Family. In 1939 he opened another sewing house in san Sebastián, where he stayed until franco’s arrival in Barcelona, which gave him the opportunity to start anew in the Catalán capital. Son after, he also opened a house in madud, thus controlling the three most important geographical points in spanish fashion.
Although the 1940 were difficut, he opened several
boutiques throughout Spain. During this decade he founded the haute couture cooperative, of which he was president for more than thirty years, and thanks to which Spanish fashion spread throughout Europe and America. Little by Little, haute couture languished, and although Pedro Rodriguez remained active until 1979, he never fullg adapted to hasty fashion.
