1. HIGH FASHION: designs have unique one-of-a-kind styles. They can be moderately or very expensive

often unusual fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished by the most experienced

3. AVANT GARDE : are people or works that are experimental, radical, or unorthodox with respect to
art, culture, or society. It is frequently characterized by aesthetic innovation and initial

4. READY- TO - WEAR (prêt-à-porter): is the term for ready-made garments, sold in finished condition
in standardized sizes, as distinct from made-to-measure or bespoke clothing tailored to a particular
person's frame. The term off-the-peg is sometimes used for items other than clothing, such as handbags.

BALMAIN
it’s a French luxury fashion French that was founded by Pierre Balmain in 1945. Balmain was born in
1914 in France. His father owned a drapery business and his mother and sister owned a fashion boutique
where he often worked after his father's death in 1921. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts in 1933–1934,
with intent to study architecture but instead ended up spending the majority of his time designing dresses, In
the late 1930s, he served in the French air force and the army pioneer corps. After peace was declared, he
worked at Lucien Lelong and opened his own fashion house under his dre eat 44, rue François 1er in Paris.
FIRST COLLECTION:. He released his first collection in October 1945 and his first fragrance, Jolie
Madame in 1949.
◦ In the period following World War II, Pierre Balmain was "a king of French fashion" and outfitted stars
including Ava Gardner and Brigitte Bardot, the Nicaraguan first lady Hope
Portocarrero and Queen Sirikit of Thailand. Marlene Dietrich wore Balmain clothes that she selected in "No
Highway in the Sky" (1951).

◦ Initially it showcased long bell-shaped skirts with small waists – a post-war style that was popularised in
1947 as Dior's New Look. The first collection was showcased in Vogue in the November issue and the
reviewer's reaction was that Balmain delivered: "beautiful clothes that you really want to wear". A
positive write-up in the magazine from Balmain's friend Gertrude Stein helped to seal the designer's
success – early celebrity fans included the Duchess of Windsor who ordered from the collection.
◦ INSPIRATION:His mother Françoise ran a fashion boutique called Galeries Parisiennes with her
sisters.He went to school at Chambéry and, during weekends with his uncle in the spa town of Aix-les-
Bains, his interest in couture fashion was inspired by society women he met.
◦ ACHIEVEMENTS:
Balmain was nominated for the for Best Costume Design and won the Drama Desk
Award for Outstanding Costume Design for Happy New Year1980). Additional Broadway theatre credits
include costumes for Sophia Loren in The Millionairess (1960) and Josephine Baker for
her eponymous 1964 revue. He also was a costume designer for 16 films, including the Brigitte Bardot
vehicle And God Created Woman and La Parisienne, and designed on-screen wardrobes for the
actresses Vivien Leigh and Mae West. He made a lot of dresses for Dalida.
◦ Compared to other Haute Couture brands Balmain is a relativity new player in the high end fashion
world. The French fashion house was founded in 1946 by Pierre Balmain. Balmain has become a world
renowned brand over the years having hosted influential designers such as Oscar de la Renta and
Christophe Decarnin.

CHANEL: is a French fashion house that focuses on women's high fashion and ready-to-wear clothes, luxury
goods and accessories .The company is owned by Alain Wertheimer and Gérard Wertheimer. grandsons of
Pierre Wertheimer. who was an early business partner of the couturière Coco Chanel. In her youth,
Gabrielle Chanel gained the nickname "Coco" from her time as a chanteuse. As a fashion designer, Coco
Chanel catered to women's taste for elegance in dress, with blouses, suits, trousers, dresses, and jewellery
(gemstone and bijouterie) of simple design, that replaced the opulent, over-designed, and constrictive
clothes and accessories of 19th-century fashion.
◦ FAMOUS:Chanel is well known for the perfume Chanel No. 5 and the Chanel Suit. Chanel's use of jersey
fabric produced garments that were comfortable and affordable. Chanel revolutionized fashion – both high
fashion (haute couture) and everyday fashion (prêt-à-porter) – by replacing structured-silhouettes, based
upon the corset and the bodice, with garments that were functional and at the same time flattering to the

Cambon in Paris. Known for mixing traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity, Chanel took inspiration from the
sportswear and menswear that her then-boyfriend, the Duke of Westminster, would wear.

◦ RICKOWENS:Richard Saturnino Owens (born November 18, 1961), known as Rick Owens, is an
American fashion designer from Porterville, California. Rick Owens was raised in Porterville, California.
His parents are John (d. 2015) and Concepción "Connie" Owens. Connie is Mexican.Owens was raised in a
conservative, Catholic household. After graduating high school, he moved to Los Angeles to study art at
Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, for two years before taking pattern-making and draping
courses at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. This led to work in the garment industry, designing copies
of designer clothing.
◦ FIRST COLLECTION:Owens launched his own label in 1994. Originally he sold his designs exclusively to
Charles Gallay, an L.A boutique that stocked Martin Margiela, Thierry Mugler and Azzadine Alaïa. Owens
opened his first boutique in Paris in 2006, this also saw the debut of his furniture collection, the Rick
Owens store in Tripeca NYC in 2008, followed by stores in Mayfair London and Ayoama Tokyo in 2009
and in Seul and Hong Kong in 2010.
◦ Owens’ male spring/summer 2012 collection saw him transcending a garments gender. Striped long dresses
were seen amongst khaki linen showing that Owens isn’t afraid to experiment with new ideas.

movements and sculptural forms. He occasionally incorporates a pair of
antlers, mimicking asymmetric wings to a pair of chairs. Owens is now
represented by a design gallery called Jousse Entreprise.

Michael David Kors (born Karl Anderson Jr.; August 9, 1959) is an American fashion designer. He is the honorary
chairman and chief creative officer of his brand, Michael Kors, which sells men's and women's ready-to-wear,
accessories, watches, jewellery, footwear, and fragrance. Kors was the first women's ready-to-wear designer for the
French house Celine, from 1997 to 2003.
Kors was born as Karl Anderson Jr. in Long Island, New York. Kors' mother is Jewish; his father was of Swedish
descent. His parents are Joan Hamburger, a former model, and her first husband, Karl Anderson Sr.His mother married
Bill Kors, when her son was five, and his surname was changed to Kors. His mother told Karl that he could choose a
new first name as well and he renamed himself Michael David Kors. He grew up in Merrick, New York and graduated
from John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, New York, on Long Island.

INSPIRATION:He loved to read fashion magazines and shop during his teen years. He designed and sold fashions
from the basement of the house. The business was called Icon Butterfly.

FIRST COLLECTION:It was called Michael Kors Womens Collection and began in 1981. The clothing was sold by
upscale department stores. His collection sold at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Lord and
Taylors, and Bloomingdale.. He had his first fashion show in 1984.07-Sep-2020

◦ SUCCESS AND ACHIEVEMENT:he launches his accessory and fashion collections. They were presented and
sold in stores in the United States.
◦ His line has expanded into swimwear, jeans, and shoes. During 2004, he introduced lower priced dresses that did
well in the recession and added perfume and handbags. In 2006, they opened their first retail store.Michael Kors
say his success is due to designing clothing that appeals to women of all sizes and price ranges. In 2011 his
company went public and by 2014 he became a billionaire when his shares went up 18 percent.The following year
his business netted over $4.5 billon in sales. In 2017 they had to close over 125 stores due to low sales. The same
year they bought Jimmy Choo stores for $1.2 billion. It is a luxury shoe store.
◦ Later he purchased Versace for 2.2 billion, and changed the name of his company to Capri Holdings Ltd. They
hope to double the sales of the new brand. He plans to sell online, open new stores, and expand Versace into Asia.
◦ ACCESSORIES AND MAJOR DESIGNS: Michael Kors designs women and men’s luxury sportswear in a wide
range of catergories. For women he designs skirts, dresses, smocks, shirts, jackets, sweaters, tops, jumpsuits, sweat
shirts, tee shirts, pants, shorts, swimwear, hats, gloves, and scarves.The accessories are handbags, wallets, shoes,
watches and jewelry. He eventually designed sportswear for men polo shirts, tee shirts, pants, jeans , sweaters,
jackets, wallets, watches, bags, and accessories.He sells mens belts, shoes, cologne, sunglasses, gloves and luggage.
Michael Kors is always observing fashion in men and women and adding to their line.In the past he has designed
cowhide vests, gold leather jeans, and body suits for men. His designs were not popular for awhile in Paris where
they said his designs reminded them of a Midwest department store. Kors always notices all the details of fashion
how customers roll up their sleeves and what they wear at the airport. In the six decades he has designed fashion, he
has learned to roll with the times and design what his customer wants.
◦ He sees fashion changing and the rigid rules in mens wear. He says the next generation is going to come and they
will have their own set of rules for fashion and design. The important part is to be ready for change. Michael say he
created men’s fashions because he could not find what he liked one day a simple pair of gray pants and a sweater.
◦ Michael Kors is actively involved in the United Nations World Food Program and other programs that address
hunger worldwide. He is married to his partner Lance LePere who works as the creative director in the company.
