Capstone update #3 (Capilano workshop)

What I have accomplished so far:

So far I have created storyboards, a script, and a general understanding of music. This week I attended a
3h animation workshop taught by Capilano’s University Professors. They used a different drawing
program Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop had a pretty similar layout to Krita so I caught on pretty
fast. The class wasn’t what I expected it to be.

I expected to learn frame-by-frame animation and create a possible 30sec short video of a raindrop
falling into water or something simple. Instead, it was more of a character design class. We got taught
how to use shapes in characters and we did a basic overview of storyboards and the importance of
them. I took notes as the lesson went on and took photos of the other workshop, I got to attend for
costume design.

Even though the costume design was intended for live-action costumes it taught me a lot about
animated costumes and gave me a new perspective on how my characters should dress and look.

After going over his lesson we were tasked with drawing the same character in angel form and in devil
form. It taught us shapes and colors in polarized characters. I am happy I took this workshop before
completing my finalized character sketches because it gave me a new perspective on my characters and
how to approach them.

What I plan to accomplish by the end of the week:

By the end of the week I hope to have completed my character sketches after I go back and refine them.
I will experiment with the colours and shapes the professor talked about. I also hope to break up my
capstone reference videos. Which I have been slowly re-filming at lunches in the drama studio (see
reference in capstone update #4)

My needs (materials, time, space, mentor)

Besides my drawing tablet, pen, and storyboards I just need time. Slowly I’m learning this is a very time-
consuming process. I think I always knew it would be. However, it’s slowly hitting me this is bigger than a
capstone project is meant for. This is a university-level project intended to be a final project. Its not
manageable for a high school student alone.
