RE: Research Assistant

Dear Hiring Manager,

My name is Mohammad Salaymeh, and I am excited to learn of the opening of a Research
Assistant role at the University of Stirling, and I would like to be considered for this position.
Along with an MSc in Public health, I have experience as a researcher, and this role would
allow me to put my experience and newly acquired skills to the test.

My work and volunteering are both qualitative and quantitative, I am involved in research
with refugee communities in London, and local communities in Kenya. I design and conduct
quantitative and qualitative surveys; liaise and communicate with stakeholders; and work
collaboratively with members of my team. Through my education and volunteering, I gained
and further developed several skill sets that are required for this role, including:

• Systematic Review Of Literature: I conducted a literature review in a systemic way in my MSc
thesis, I collected papers discussing the development of ethnicity as an epidemiological variable.

• Qualitative and quantitative data collection and thematic analysis: I am co-designing a survey for
the Caitlin O’Hara Community Health Clinic—part of the Leo project— to survey the community of
Nanyuki, Kenya, and understand their health needs. We are surveying their access to contraceptives;
sexual health information; WASH; and maternal healthcare. I am taking part in collecting data and
analysing quantitative and qualitative data, using Kobotoolbox for collection and Nvivo for thematic
analysis.

• Qualitative Project Supervision and administration: I supervise graduate public health students,
and guide their research at Middlesex University— using qualitative methods. Currently, I supervise 2
projects that use qualitative methods like in-depth interviews and focus groups in their research.

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team: Currently, I am part of the multi-
disciplinary research and advocacy team at Bees & Refugees. In addition to that, I work as an
independent research volunteer for MSF, conducting bi-weekly literature reviews for their
newsletter.

• Research Administrative skills: I am proficient at completing tasks related to administration and
organising research-related events and workshops. Currently, I am co-organising an event at the
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, related to health in Palestine.

• Recruitment of participants for the Bobath Center Survey: Re-running a survey that focuses on the
impact of COVID-19 on adults and children with cerebral palsy, I am currently re-recurring past
participants, and using a snowballing method to reach more participants. I am also using LinkedIn,
Facebook, and Instagram to recruit more new participants.

• Organisational skills: I use tasks management software (Google Tasks) to keep track of all my tasks
and their due dates. I also split large projects into smaller, more manageable tasks so I can easily
complete them in the days leading up to the deadline.

I am looking forward to further discussing my application for the role with you over the telephone or
in person, in case you need any more information to help move my application forward, please let me
know. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely yours
Mohammad Salaymeh
