RE: Research Assistant

   Old College,
Dear Hiring Manager, South Bridge,

My name is Mohammad Salaymeh, and I am excited to learn of the opening of a Research Assistant Edinburgh EH8 9YL, UK
role at the University of Edinburgh, and I would like to be considered for this position. Along with an
MSc in Public health and a BSc in Pharmacy, I have experience as a researcher and healthcare
provider, and this role would allow me to put my experience and newly acquired skills to the test.

I volunteer with charities as a researcher in the UK and Kenya. I design and conduct qualitative and
quantitative surveys and interviews for the Leo project and the National Bobath Cerebral Palsy Center;
liaising and communicating with stakeholders; working collaboratively with members of my
team. Through my education and volunteering, I gained and further developed several skill sets that
are required for this role, including:

•Stata for Analysing Quantitative Data: Through my MSc degree, I gained proficiency in
performing analyses of data arising from quantitative epidemiological studies, using
appropriate Stata software.

• Qualitative and quantitative data collection and thematic analysis: I am co-designing a survey for
the Caitlin O’Hara Community Health Clinic—part of the Leo project— to survey the community of
Nanyuki, Kenya, and understand their health needs. We are surveying their access to contraceptives;
sexual health information; WASH; and maternal healthcare. I am taking part in collecting data and
analysing quantitative and qualitative data, using Kobotoolbox for collection and Nvivo for thematic
analysis.

• Research Project Supervision and administration: I supervise graduate public health students, and
guide their research at Middlesex University— both qualitative and mixed-methods research.
Currently, I tutor 3 students and advise them on their research methods; correct the work; and edit
their manuscripts which requires a degree of attention to detail.

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team: Currently, I am part of the multi-
disciplinary research and advocacy team at Bees & Refugees. In addition to that, I work as an
independent research volunteer for MSF, conducting bi-weekly literature reviews for their
newsletter.

• Recruitment of participants for the Bobath Center Survey: Re-running a survey that focuses on the
impact of COVID-19 on adults and children with cerebral palsy, I am currently re-recurring past
participants, and using a snowballing method to reach more participants. I am also using LinkedIn,
Facebook, and Instagram to recruit more new participants.

• Research Administrative skills: I am proficient at completing tasks related to administration and

organising research-related events and workshops. Currently, I am co-organising an event at the
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, related to health in Palestine.

• Organisational skills: I use tasks management software (Google Tasks) to keep track of all my tasks
and their due dates. I also split large projects into smaller, more manageable tasks so I can easily
complete them in the days leading up to the deadline.

I am looking forward to further discussing my application for the role with you over the telephone or
in person, in case you need any more information to help move my application forward, please let me
know. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely yours
Mohammad Salaymeh
