The unjust world of 1984
George Orwell once stated, "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot
stamping on a human face." Orwell wrote his novel to warn us against the
dangers of a totalitarian world and how it could demolish nations. A bleak world
controlled by total totalitarianism is any society's nightmare; this is what is
displayed in the novel 1984 by George Orwell. An unjust world where people
1
cannot even try to fight for their fundamental human rights, a world where your
2
mind is imprisoned and manipulated from the day one's born till the day he
3
dies. This was evident through his portrayal of propaganda, class division, and
torture.
4
The most obvious and striking way to deceive people in the novel is through
propaganda. It was used by the party in order to conceal their corruption and
selfish needs (All Answers Ltd). It leads people to think that the party is on their
side and believe everything the party says (The Use of Propaganda in 1984, by
George Orwell | 123 Help Me). People are working for the party like slaves
5
obeying their master, and this is done in various ways; the face of Big Brother
6
hanging everywhere to remind people that they are constantly watched; the
slogans of the party that displays the party's obsession with power; the never-
ending ideological wars and their always-changing enemies to keep people
7
distracted; the "Two Minute Hate" that is used to stir up the anger of the people
against a non-existent enemy; the constant monitoring of the people through
telescreens and denying them of their privacy to ban any conspiracy; the
mistrusting and loveless relationship built between family members from a
8
young age to ensure no feelings are built; and the control of history and events
9
happening to keep people in the dark. All these events clearly illustrate how
propaganda is a deadly method used by the party to have total power over
people's minds and souls. Furthermore, the problem is that the party uses
10
these very absurd methods, but most people do not even realize how badly they
11
are living and that they are brainwashed.
12
The class division exists in nearly all societies, even if we fail to see or believe
it. It separates people and creates a boundary between them. It makes people
look down on each other even if it was not their intention. This theme is
demonstrated in the novel and causes Winston, the main character in the story,
13 14
to rebel against the party. The society in the novel is divided into Big Brother as
the leader of Oceania and the one whom people's loyalties should be toward;
15
inner party members, the upper-class who make up only 2% of the population,
and are the ones who have power and control over the nation; outer party,
middle class who work for the inner class; and the proles, the lower class, who
make up the majority of the population, and they are uneducated and not cared
16
for (StudyMoose).
Moreover, this division shows the unjust world and extreme conditions that the
outer party members and proles live in; even though they work and do their
17
jobs, they are treated very differently. They are given the worst kind of food,
clothes, and shelter compared to the inner party members who enjoy privileges
they never share (Orwell). Even though party members always complete their
18
work, some are rebels at heart and hate how they are treated. As long as this
20
division remains and the middle and lower classes are always looked down
upon, the nation will never prosper, and most people will suffer because of the
19
distinction from the minority.
Even though Orwell warned us against the dangers of a totalitarian world, this
kind of government exists today and in several countries. People are suffering
from the greed for power caused by the people in charge, and it does not seem
like it will end soon. People must always stand up for their rights and freedom
and have a say in their government, or else they might face the same fate or
worse.
