However, it is necessary to organise the data being sent into a specific format and this is done using
data channels.
The Global System for Mobile Communications, GSM sends a lot of data to and from the mobile
phones. Typically each piece of data is very short.
Although it would be possible to have a different radio frequency channel for each type of data, this
would be a very inefficient way of segregating the data.
Instead the data can all be carried over the same radio frequency signal, but they can be sorted into
different messages that can be sent. These messages are tagged in a way that the system or mobile
knows what they are.
Although there is an overhead with this because the messages all need to ahve labels, it is still far
more efficient and effective than using a different radio frequency signal or channel for each type of
data.
The access grant channel (AGCH) is carried data which instructs the mobile to
operate in a particular physical channel (Time slot or ARFCN).
It uses normal burst.
All these gsm channels help maintain GSM network and also helps GSM mobile
phone connect to GSM network and maintain the connection and help tear down
the connection. Figure below mention all the channels used in GSM.
GSM Possible Channel combinations
(Noncombined and combined)
There are certain rules by which different channel types are used in different time
slots. These rules are used to map logical channels to physical channels. The
most important slot is the time slot TS0 where in BCCH is mapped and is very
useful as SI messages(system information messages) are transmitted over this
channel.
