Assessment Part 2

You should submit a written essay (maximum 1,500 words) in response to a choice of set

questions on challenges and opportunities for leadership, management, partnership
working and collaboration in healthcare (50% of module mark).
The NHS was catapulted into turbulence and uncertainty in March 2020 when the World
Health Organisation declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic and health services
were forced almost immediately into considering new ways of working. This situation
provides an opportunity for us to look at the lessons for healthcare jobs, teams and
organisations in a future changed by the consequences of the Covid pandemic.
Answer one of the following questions exploring changes happening today that are likely to
shape the way that people in health services lead and manage in a post-Covid future.
Question 1
For senior professionals, line managers and people in junior roles, the aftermath of the
Covid pandemic will need a range of leadership skills. What are the key styles and
behaviours health service staff may need to develop in the context of the “new normal” in
order to enhance their performance as a leader, and why?

Question 2
The Healthcare Leadership Model aims to help managers who work in health services to
become better leaders. Can the same people behind the decisions to beat the coronavirus
pandemic also inspire future confidence for other areas of healthcare, in ways that reassure
staff, patients and the public?

Question 3
Recognising the kind of post-Covid environment we are working in, does leadership
encompass the individual skills and resources that motivate followers—doing what is
necessary to get results—or is an increased focus on collaboration and community key to
the future challenges healthcare organisations face?
