What are Humanities?

Humanities are academic disciplines that study aspects of human society and
culture. In the Renaissance, the term contrasted with divinity and referred to what is now
called classics, the main area of secular study in universities at the time. “The term
‘humanities’ includes, but is not limited to, the study and interpretation of the following:
language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence;
philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and
theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and
employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the
human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions,
and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national
life.”

What are the Humanities?

a) Literature

➢ Is a series of careful readings of literary works that reward both first encounters
and long study with the purpose of considering particular conceptions of what it
means to be human as well as the place of such conceptions in the development
of critical thought.
b) History

➢ History of Humanities, along with the newly formed Society for the History of the
Humanities, takes as its subject the history of a wide variety of disciplines including
archaeology, art history, historiography, linguistics, literary studies, musicology,
philology, and media studies, tracing these fields from there.
c) Philosophy

➢ Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental questions about existence,

knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Such questions are often posed as
problems to be studied or resolved. The term was probably coined by Pythagoras.

d) Language

➢ A language is a structured system of communication. Language, in a broader sense, is

the method of communication that involves the use of – particularly human – languages.
The scientific study of language is called linguistics.

form, language meaning, and language in context. Linguists traditionally analysis
human language by observing an interplay between sound and meaning.
f) Anthropology

➢ Anthropology is the scientific study of humans, human behavior and societies in the
past and present. Social anthropology studies patterns of behavior and cultural
anthropology studies cultural meaning, including norms and values. Linguistic
anthropology studies how language influences social life.

g) Art history

➢ Is the study of objects of art considered within their time period. Art historians analyze
visual arts' meaning (painting, sculpture, architecture) at the time they were created.
