Observe the sentence:

If you got out of bed, the world would probably end.

Does it refer to a real possibility?

What are the verb tenses used?
2ND Conditional

If I had enough money, I would go to Japan.

conditional clause main clause
condition result

I would go to Japan if I had enough money

main clause conditional clause
result condition
Second Conditional
Unreal possibility or dream

• The second conditional :

• We are thinking about the future.
• We are thinking about a particular condition in the future, and the result of
this condition. It is not very real, but still there is a remote possibility.

If I had more time, I would hang out with friends.

Second Conditional: unreal possibility, a
hypothetical situation or a dream

• Notice that we are thinking about a future condition.

We use:

 Verb in the past simple tense to talk about the future

condition.
 WOULD + base verb to talk about the future result.

IF condition result
past simple WOULD + base verb
If I won the lottery I would buy a Ferrari.
Second Conditional:
unreal possibility or dream

IF CONDITION RESULT
past simple WOULD + base verb
If I had a job, I would have some money.
If it snowed in Campinas, would you be surprised?
If you didn’t have a place to live, what would you do?
Second Conditional:
unreal possibility or dream

RESULT IF CONDITION
WOULD + base verb past simple
I would have some money if I had a job.
Janet would marry Paul if he won the lottery.
Would you be surprised if it snowed in Campinas?
you didn’t have a place to
What would you do if live?

Sometimes, we use should, could or might instead of would,

for example: If I won a million dollars, I could stop working.
We can use it to talk about things in the future that are

(I’m not you …)
Result: wouldn’t Condition: didn’t have
• This kind of conditional sentence is different
from the first conditional because this is a lot
more unlikely.

For example (second conditional):

How is the • If I had enough money, I would buy a
second house with twenty bedrooms and a
swimming pool.
conditional (I'm probably not going to have this much
money. It's just a dream, not very real)

Verb to be in the second conditional

 If I were not in debt, I would quit my job.

 If he were taller, he'd be accepted into the team.
 She would still be correcting my grammar if she were still alive.

• Though in informal English, you will hear some people say If I

was... If he was... etc. This usage doesn't sound good even though
it is common.
Note that you can have a question in the result
(main clause), never in the conditional clause.
If I had more time, ...

Pair If I studied more, ...

Activity – If I won the lotery, ...

Second If I could change something in my life, ...

Conditional If I were the presidente of my country, ...
