10. The lower part of an inverted right circular cone of base radius 24 cm is cut to form a
vessel in the form of a frustum. The height of the vessel is 5 cm. The base radius of the part
being cut is 18 cm.
(a) Find the capacity of the vessel. (4 marks)
(b) The vessel is placed on a horizontal table. 2 L of water is poured into the vessel. Find
the depth of water in the vessel. (3 marks)

11. The unit cost ($C) of printing a book is partly constant and partly varies inversely as
the total number of books (n) to be printed. When 100 books are printed, the unit cost
is $12; when 400 books are printed, the unit cost is $10.5.

(b) The selling price of each book is $13. If 2000 books are printed but only 80%
of them are sold, what is the profit / loss per cent of selling the books?

(b) A piece of hot metal was left to cool in a laboratory such that, t minutes later, its
temperature ( T ) in degree Celsius ( 0 C ) is given by T  a  125r t , where a and r are
constants. It is given that the temperatures of the piece of metal are 127 0 C and 910 C
after 1 minute and 3 minutes respectively and r > 0.5 .
(i) Prove that 125r 3  125r  36  0 . Hence find the values of r and a. (4 marks)
(ii) Find the initial temperature of the piece of metal. (1 mark)
(iii) It is given that the temperature of the piece of metal will be lower than half of its
initial temperature after n minutes. Find the smallest integral value of n.

(a) Using the method of completing the square, express, in terms of k, the coordinates of the
vertex of the graph of y = f(x). (3 marks)

(b) It is given that the y-coordinate of the vertex of the graph of y = f(x) is 3.
(i) Find the values of k.
(ii) Let P and Q be the 2 possible positions of the vertex of the graph of y = f(x).
Denote the origin by O. Find the centroid of ∆OPQ.
