SECTION A (40 marks)
𝛼+1
1. Make α the subject of the formula 𝛽 = 3−2𝛼 . (3 marks)
3
(𝑎 −2 𝑏)
2. Simplify 𝑎𝑏2
and express your answer in positive indices. (3 marks)

5. Adam deposits S10000 in a bank at 3% p.a. for 5 years. Find the interest if it is compounded quarterly.
Given the answer correct to the nearest dollar. (3 marks)
8. ABC is a triangle with AC equal to BC and O as its incentre. Find ∠AOC given that ∠ABC is 40o.

y
9. The figure shows a line segment joining points A(-2,8) and B(5,7). A(-2, 8)
C(1,c) lies on the perpendicular bisector (not drawn) of AB. Find c. B(5, 7)
(4 marks) × C(1, c)
x
10. If the mean and mode of the ten numbers 14, 6, 8, 4, 18, 6, 16, x, y and z are 11 and 14 respectively,
find the median of theses ten numbers. (4 marks)
2021-2022-AE-S3-MATH CP 1-4 4
SECTION B (35 marks)
12. The figure shows a frustum of a right circular cone. The radii of its upper and 40 cm
lower base are 40 cm and 16 cm respectively. The height of the frustum is h cm
h 16 cm
while the height of the smaller cone is H cm. The volume of the frustum is
37440π cm3.
H
(a) (i) Show that H = 2h / 3. (1 mark)
(ii) Hence determine the value of h. (3 marks)
(b) Now the frustum is cut, parallel to its base, into a pair of similar frustums as shown.
The radius at the circular cut surface is r cm. 40 cm
(i) Find r. (2 marks) r
(ii) Hence, determine the curved surface area of the larger frustum, i.e. the
upper one. (4 marks) 16 cm

13. Sixty students enters an
examination in which the
maximum mark is 100. The
cumulative frequency
polygon shown the marks
scored of the students.
(a) The top 15% students can
get a prize. Use the polygon
to find the minimum marks
required. (3 marks)
(b) Find the mean mark of the
students. (3 marks)
2021-2022-AE-S3-MATH CP 1-6 6
15. AB and AC represent straight roads while BC represents a 250 m
300 m
straight bridge on a map as shown. AB and AC are measured B
350 m
to be both 4.5 cm on the map. B is NE from A and A is N30oW A
400 m
from C.
C 450 m
(a) Determine the true bearing of B from C. (3 marks) 550 m
600 m
500 m
(b) Calculate the inclination of the road BC. (4 marks)
Scale 1: 20000
2021-2022-AE-S3-MATH CP 1-7 7
16. The shown circular dartboard with a square inscribed is used in a dart
game. The radius of the dartboard is 20 cm. Collin throws a dart at
random and the dart hits the dartboard.
(a) (i) Find the probability that the dart hits the shaded area. (3 marks)
(ii) If a similar dartboard of radius 30 cm is used, a student claims that the probability of hitting the
shaded area, provided that the dart hits the dartboard, is larger. State whether the claim is
correct with reason. (1 mark)
(b) In an amusement park, an identical dartboard is used in a game according to the following rules:
The fee for each throw : $10
Cash award in the following cases : Hitting the shaded region : $14
Hitting the square region : $7
Assume that Collin always hits the dartboard. Is it preferable for Collin to enter the game? Justify
your answer with calculation. (3 marks)
