IE 322 – Industrial Operations Analysis -2- 2022/2023 3rd Semester

Project Guidelines

These guidelines will help you build a successful class project for the course IE 322 (industrial operations
analysis -2-). This material is subject to addition or alteration if necessary.
This project is composed of a few steps as follows:

Forming a group
The first step in this project to find team mates to form a group of min. 3 to max. 4 students. Finding a
team mate from a different section is permissible. However, forming a group in the same section is highly
preferable. Keep in mind that you need to be ready to present your work in a different section if there is a
member of the group in that section.

Modeling
You don’t need to look for a company and a case to complete the project. The case is already given. See
attached document containing a detailed description of the case. Therefore, the first step in the project is
to understand the case and build an integer linear programming model. The purpose is to determine a
production, inventory, distribution, and marketing plan. The plan should be developed using integer linear
programming (ILP), i.e. you have to build and solve an ILP to determine the plan. So, the first step is to
formulate the ILP. The objective is clearly stated in the case description file. Make sure to define your
decision variables correctly. Then write the objective function and constraints according to the case
details.

Coding, Report Writing, and Presentation

The next step is to code the model using CPLEX software and solve it to find the optimal results. After
that, you have to write the results in the report along with the recommendations. It’s very important to
interpret and discuss your results in details. Use any tools at your disposal to ensure an effective
communication of your results. Imagine you have to present your results to IED, Inc.’s top management
who don’t know anything about integer linear programming. Visualizations can be very useful in this
situation.
Technical report specifications: the maximum number of pages of the report is 10 (excluding appendices);
use Times New Roman font; double spacing; and the margins are 1 inch on all sides.

You also have to create a PowerPoint presentation to present your results.

Submission
Each group should submit the report, the CPLEX code, and the PowerPoint slides. Be prepared to present
your work. The presentation time should NOT exceed 7 minutes.
