ENGG111 – Personal Ethics

ED&I Infographic Task

Introduction
Equality, diversity, and inclusion is a critical component to professional engineering and takes a
prominent role within the strategies of the University and School of Engineering, as well as
professional bodies such as the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Royal Aeronautical Society, and
Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng).
As a graduate entering the engineering profession (or wider workplace), it is important that you are
aware of the importance ED&I plays in creating a supportive and productive workplace. These tasks
are designed to help you consider the role that you can play in fostering an inclusive environment –
both here in the SoE and as you pursue your future career.

Learning Outcomes
• Demonstrate your awareness and understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
• Put into practice key transferable skills such as collaboration, digital fluency, creativity, and
commercial awareness.
• Advance skills in personal reflection and interpersonal communication along with developing
an appreciation and understanding of the different views of your peers.

Assignment Breakdown
This assignment is worth 5% of the overall module.
The assignment will be set in week 11 and is due at the end of week 12 (Friday 15th December,
23:59).
In your ENGG111 group, you will create a digital infographic case study focusing on initiatives to
promote ED&I by engineering companies.
Only one member of the group needs to upload a copy of the final submission on Canvas.
However, each student will need to clearly state their contribution to the assignment.
Please upload your submission as a pdf file with two pages. The first page containing the infographic
and the second page containing the work plan and a table of each group members contributions.
Creating your Infographic Case Study
Your infographic needs to be a single page of A3 (portrait). You will be provided with a basic
template. However, you are encouraged to think about the presentation of your infographic and how
to make it eye-catching and easy to read.
A selection of these infographics may be displayed around the School of Engineering in the future,
so please do not include any names, information, or remarks that may identify yourself.

Step One: Choose a case study

Firstly, your team will need to choose one of these companies to produce a case study on. During
this step it will be helpful to complete some initial research into each company.

• Airbus • Rolls-Royce
• Arup • Siemens Energy
• Network Rail • United Utilities

Step Two: Create a work plan

To help you work effectively as a team, create a work plan that includes a task list and evenly
distributes the work amongst team members. Look at the information that should be included in the
infographic and decide what tasks you will need to do to achieve this.

This should be completed by the end of the workshop in week 11. A summary of the work
plan should be included on the second page of the submission.

Step Three: Further research initiatives/policies in place at your chosen company

During the first step you will have done some initial research into your chosen company but now you
will need to look deeper into their initiatives as well as the RAEng Strategy and its D&I action plan
(for comparison).
Keep in mind your work plan and what questions you need to answer during your research. Individual
research questions can be delegated to sub-groups within the team.

Step Four: Compile your case study & create your infographic
Using the template and infographic guidance provided, create an eye-catching infographic that
includes the following information. In the template, start by replacing the red text with your own.
1. Company Summary – Introduce the background and context including:
• What company have you chosen?
• What does the company do and what sector does the company sit in?
• What is this sector’s track record for diversity and inclusion?

2. ED&I Initiative – Summarise the initiative in place and cover:

• What initiatives are the company using to promote ED&I in the workplace?
• How does their initiative compare to the RAEng Strategy 2020 – 2025 and its Diversity
and Inclusion Action Plan?
• How will their initiative improve diversity & inclusion?

3. Characteristics of Diversity & Factors of Inclusion – Select one of the protected characteristics
and discuss:
• Relating to your chosen protected characteristic, is there a group of people
underrepresented in the engineering profession?
• What impact will the company’s initiatives have on this group?
4. Reflection – Reflect on this company’s initiative and discuss:
• Do you think this initiative/policy will be effective in improving ED&I in the workplace?
• Do you have any constructive feedback to the company on their initiative?
• Is there a variety of opinions in your group about the initiative or policy? (remember, don’t
include names).
One the second slide of the template is space for you to provide your work plan and a breakdown of
each team members contribution to the assignment.
