Lesson Plan for Reading and Writing

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, s the students are expected to;
a. Describe a written text as a connected discourse; and
b. Identify properties of well-written text.

A1. Motivation: “One Word”
The teacher will show some words to the students and she will call the students and will ask the
following questions below:
1. What is this word?
2. Can you tell me what is the synonym/antonym of this word?
A2. Analysis: The teacher will ask the following questions:

1. What have you observed from our previous activities?


2. What does the word/s tells you??
3. What can you infer about it?

Description
In a description pattern, proper spatial order is considered logical arrangement, too. Thus, it makes most
sense to put the third sentence as the first supporting point, second sentence as the second supporting point, and
first sentences as the last supporting point. It is more logical to start from the entrance of Mandela in the
stadium before the ecstatic shouting and focusing on the emblem.
You may have also noticed the descriptive phrases used in some of the sentences such as stadium
erupted and ecstatic shouts of "Nelson, Nelson.". The writer did not just mention that the audience were very
excited and were shouting Nelson's name very loudly and repetitively. The writer also tried to capture the scene
by making the readers experience it through specific descriptive words and phrases that appeal to the senses.
The phrase stadium erupted appealed to the readers' sense of sight, while the phrase ecstatic shouts of "Nelson,
Nelson" made the readers almost hear the shouts in their minds.
As you may have realized by now, a descriptive text is the type of writing that creates a clear picture of
a single scene, object, person, place, or anything visible. When you are writing a descriptive text, think of
yourself as a camera. You must focus your description on a single item because a camera cannot focus on many
items at the same time.
The table below shows how the properties of a well-written text are considered in writing an effective
descriptive text.

ORGANIZATION Arrange details in a specific spatial order (e.g., from top to bottom, left to
right, outside to inside, or vice versa.)
COHERENCE AND Use transitional devices that signal spatial order (e.g., As I enter the
COHESION room... etc.)
APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE Use details that appeal to the senses-sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing
USE (e.g., sight: I felt like I was blinded by the glow of the silver sequined
dress...; hearing: The roaring engine of the old train was deafening...).
Avoid using vague words such as better, or greater, among others.
PROPER MECHANICS Ensure correct capitalization, spelling, punctuation, and format.

Writing a Descriptive Text


To write a descriptive text, do the following:
1. Do prewriting activities to decide on a topic.
2. Write a thesis statement.
3. Generate details and organize ideas using the description pattern.
4. Regin writing your draft.

Write a Thesis Statement


Write a thesis statement by presenting the topic of the text and your overall impression of that topic. As
a reader, you can tell which pattern of development a writer uses when you read his or her point in the thesis
statement. The formula in writing a thesis statement is: topic + writer's opinion = thesis statement. So, if the
opinion indicates a dominant description of the topic, then the reader can be sure that the writer uses the
description pattern. Read the sample thesis statement below.

Boracay is a tourist destination not just for its white-sand beaches but also for its cozy
restaurants.

Familiarize yourself with thesis statements for descriptive texts by connecting the topics in column A with the
appropriate descriptive phrases in column B.

Generate Details
Generate details by filling out the table below with specific details that appeal to any of the reader's
senses as in the column headings. Remember that you should provide vivid details so that you will be successful
in making the readers experience through your words how beautiful and exciting a place is. Examples have been
given to you.

Organize Ideas
Organize your ideas by completing the outline below with your lead-in and thesis statements in the
introduction, topic sentences for each paragraph in the body, and review of points in the conclusion.
Drafting a Descriptive Text
Come up with a title, an introduction, body, and conclusion. Since your focus is to use the description
pattern, make sure to formulate a vivid introduction and an interesting conclusion. Begin with a lead-in
statement and end your essay with statements that are directly connected to your topic to surely come up with a
well-written text.
Here are some tips to construct your text's title:

 Use as few words as possible (e.g., "Breathtaking Boracay)


 Let your title carry the tone of yourntext.
 Be specific about the topic of your text (e.g., "Culture Shock in an Out-of-the-Country Destination").
Write your first draft by devoting one paragraph for the introduction, at least three for the body, and
another one for the conclusion. Remember that to make your description effective, you must arrange the details
logically, using appropriate transition words and phrases for spatial order, such as the ones below.
Revising
Do necessary revisions on your draft if you answered "no" to any of the questions in the revision
checklist below. Add more or eliminate details, if necessary.
 Does the thesis statement contain a specific topic and your overall impression of it?
 Does each topic sentence in the body support the description of the topic in the thesis statement.
 Do the specific details appeal to the reader's senses-sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste?

Editing
Proofread your draft if you think that the text needs no further revision, that is, if you have conformed to
the specific features of description pattern. Check for spelling, punctuation, format, and grammatical errors.

PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT: DEFINITION


You often encounter definition texts, especially when you browse reference books such as encyclopedia
and textbooks. A definition text is the type of writing that explains not only what something means but also
what something does, what something is used for, what something looks like, and others. Simply put, to write a
definition text is to write about something in a way that you distinguish it from any other things in the world.
A definition text is used not only to inform. You may also use this to entertain, that is, by giving a
humorous definition of a popular term. You may want to define a term to enlighten people about a controversy
as well. These are just some of the many ways you can make use of your skills in writing a definition text.
Prewriting: Writing the main idea for a definition Text
Choose a Topic
Think of a difficult or unfamiliar word that you want to define. You may try to think of a popular term in
different fields of study. Any term could be a good topic for a definition text It is how you present it through
your thesis statement that makes the difference.
Formulate an Opinion
Writing the Main Idea for a Definition Text Prewriting Write your opinion depending on your purpose
in writing the text. If you want to entertain, you may define a term in a humorous way. But if you want to
persuade, you may define the term in a more serious manner.
You only need to remember that your opinion or main point about a term must be your own definition of
it. In coming up with your own definition, you will have to decide on the right class in which the term belongs
to (e.g., for the term love, you may state that it is a feeling). Then, add the distinct characteristics or qualities
that sets the term apart from all the other terms in that class.
Supporting the Main Idea
In supporting your main idea, you have to think of other words that are associated to the term being
defined. You may include synonyms, antonyms, examples, and nonexamples.
Connect your ideas with transition words or phrases that signal definition and examples, such as defined
as, connotes, is/are, indicates, means, suggests, is not, for example, like, such as, another trait, specifically, and
the like.
Think of a term and its definitions, synonyms, antonyms, examples, and nonexamples to complete the Frayer
model.

IV. Thematic Integration:

Writing is very important in our daily lives because in writing we can express our ideas that we cannot
express verbally. In writing, for us to see if we’re competent enough, we should know how to use correct
punctuation marks for us to express it properly and avoid misinterpretations.
