Safety Protocol to Avoid Health Risk during Mountaineering

 Mountaineering involves hiking, climbing, or just simply walking on a hilly or mountainous

ground, with the help of technical equipment and support. It is regarded as a sport, though it is
entirely different from the discipline of rock climbing. In participating to this kind of physical
activity, proper personal safety precautions are necessary to avoid certain conditions such as
dehydration, overexertion, hypo-, and hyperthermia.
 Primary considerations before engaging in mountaineering
 Technical knowledge and skills- acquiring basic mountaineering skills such as climbing are
important. Also, proper clothing, food and equipment are necessary to bring during mountain
climbing.
 Physical and mental preparation- mountain climbing demands a high level of physical skill
that is set beyond limit. Just like physical preparation, mental preparation is needed in
mountain climbing. Being calm and having a clear mind is essential.
 Judgment and experience- valuable judgment or decision in a challenged situation can
determine a mountaineers’ success.
 Caring for the wilderness- leave no trace- since we have the privilege to explore the
mountains, our minimum charge is to leave them as we found them, with no sign of our
passing.
 During this time of the pandemic, personal safety precautions and guidelines from authorities must
be strictly observed and followed to avoid health risks in engaging in outdoor activities such as
mountaineering.

 Health Risks Condition:

 Dehydration refers to excessive loss of water from the body, usually through perspiration or
sweating, urination, or evaporation. Before going on the hike, you should drink one or two
glasses of water. Your body only begins to feel thirsty when the water level is already low,
meaning you shouldn't wait for the body's "thirsty" signal before drinking. Instead, keep your
water level from dropping in the first place by hydrating before doing the activity.
 Overexertion refers to the detrimental cause of excessive training. Some individuals engage
in too much physical activity, thus they are susceptible to a variety of hyperkinetic
conditions known as “overload syndrome”. This condition is characterized by fatigue,
irritability, and sleep problems.
 Hyperthermia, an alarming rise in body temperature, which is an effect of exercising in a
very humid environment. It sets the stage for heat stress, and even heat stroke, the potentially
fatal collapse of the temperature-regulating mechanism.
 Hypothermia refers to excessively low body temperature, characterized by uncontrollable
shivering, loss of coordination, and mental confusion. This occurs when the body begins to
lose heat faster than it can be produced.

 How to stay safe while Mountaineering?

 Bring the right gear. It is essential to wear proper gear for hiking and mountain climbing.
Wear clothing that allows you to move and maneuver comfortably. Choose well-fitting
shoes that provide ankle support, stability, and grip.
 Prevent altitude-related illnesses. Most altitude-related illnesses are caused by a lack of
oxygen. High altitudes have a lower concentration of oxygen in the air. You may be able
to avoid altitude sickness by proper acclimatization.
 Acclimatization- the process or result of becoming accustomed to a new climate or
condition.
 Descent- If you or a climbing partner has any symptoms of altitude-related illness,
descend immediately. Try to descend by 3,000 feet or more. If descent isn’t immediately
possible, take temporary measures to manage the illness. For example, the person should
be placed in a pressurized (Gamow) bag, given oxygen.

 Tips that can help mountaineers stay safe and deal with security concerns (Safety Protocol):
 Research your hiking destination's present situation before proceeding with your hike.
 Register and exchange contact numbers with proper authorities.
 Give your itinerary, names, and contact numbers to a third party or a ‘rescue officer’. This
is a standard protocol for hiking clubs and should be standard practice for all hikers.
 As civilians, hikers are discouraged from wearing military-looking outfits.
 As much as possible, get authorized guides and make clear the terms of your agreement
beforehand.
 Do not climb mountains that are closed unless you have official permission to do so.
 Do not bring too much cash and flashy items when climbing.
 Avoid excessive drinking and making loud noises in the mountains.
 Think before you post your whereabouts on social media.
 Consider every hike as a different situation. When thinking about security, think not just
about the hiking destination, but the people you’re hiking with, the itinerary you’re taking,
how many days you’ll be on a mountain.

Task 1: Arrange the words!

Answer the questions by arranging the jumbled letters. Write your answer in your activity notebook.
1. MALICCANOITZATI _______________becoming adjusted to a new climate or condition.
2. YHARDTNOEDI ___________________ excessive loss of water from the body, usually through
perspiration or sweating.
3. OMUNTIAENEGIRN_________________ involves hiking, climbing, or just simply walking, on
hilly or mountainous ground, with the help of technical equipment and support.
4. YHEPRTEHRAIM __________________refers to an alarming rise in body temperature.
5. AIMOTHERHPY ____________________ refers to excessive low body temperature.

Task 2: Fact or Bluff

Write the word “Fact” if the statement is true, and the word “Bluff” if the statement is false. Use your
activity notebook to write your answer.
1. With proper preparation and careful attention to safety, high-altitude hiking and mountain travel
can be a fun, challenging, and truly inspiring experience.
2. It is not illegal to local authorities to climb mountains that are ordered closed.
3. Consuming alcoholic drinks before hiking should be avoided, as it significantly contributes to
dehydration.
4. Stop drinking when you stop hiking.
5. Most hikers leave their contact numbers in logbooks, but it is also important to get their numbers in
return.

Task 3:
