1.0 OBJECTIVES
1. To provide student with the knowledge and skills necessary to work with plastic materials,
including the different types of plastic materials, their properties, and the various processing
methods.
2. To help student improve their existing plastic processing techniques, such as injection
molding or extrusion, to increase productivity, reduce waste, and improve product quality.
3. To help student develop new plastic products, by exploring new processing techniques,
materials, and design concepts.

2.0 INTRODUCTION
Plastic processing is a manufacturing process that involves the conversion of plastic materials
into useful products. Plastics are synthetic materials made from polymers, which are long
chains of molecules. There are various types of plastic materials, each with unique properties
that make them suitable for different applications .Plastic processing involves a range of
techniques, including injection molding , extrusion, blow molding , thermoforming, and
rotational molding , among others. These techniques involve heating and shaping plastic
materials into specific forms, such as bottles, packaging, automotive parts, toys, and
electronics components. Plastic processing has become a critical part of modern
manufacturing, as plastic materials offer numerous advantages over traditional materials such
as metal or glass. These advantages include lightweight, durability, corrosion resistance, and
flexibility in design. However, plastic processing also poses significant environmental
challenges due to the large amounts of plastic waste generated and the difficulty in recycling
some types of plastic materials. As a result, the plastic processing industry is continually
seeking ways to improve processing techniques, reduce waste, and develop sustainable
alternatives to traditional plastic materials.

4.0 PLASTIC PROCESSING INFORMATION
Thermoset – Compression
Compression moulding is a plastic processing technique that involves compressing a heated
plastic material into a mould cavity to create a desired shape. The process is typically used
for thermosetting plastics, which are materials that can be heated and cured into a permanent
shape. In compression moulding, the plastic material is first placed into a heated mold cavity.
The mould is then closed, and pressure is applied to compress the material and force it to
conform to the shape of the mould. The material is heated and cured under pressure, creating
a solid, finished product.

Thermoplastic – Blow moulding

Blow moulding is a plastic processing technique used to manufacture hollow objects, such as
bottles, containers, and tanks. The process involves melting plastic pellets, known as resin,
and then shaping the molten plastic into a hollow form by blowing compressed air into a
mould. The mould is typically made of two halves, which are clamped together around a
hollow tube called a parison. The parison is formed by extruding molten plastic through a die,
which shapes the plastic into a tube with a uniform wall thickness. The parison is then placed
in the mould, and compressed air is blown into the parison, causing the plastic to expand and
take the shape of the mould. The mould is cooled to solidify the plastic, and the finished
product is removed from the mould.

6.0 CONCLUSIONS
In conclusion, a plastic processing workshop can provide valuable insights into the various plastic
processing techniques and their applications. Plastic processing is an essential part of modern
manufacturing, as plastic materials offer numerous advantages over traditional materials such as metal
or glass. The workshop can help student understand the importance of plastic processing and the
environmental challenges posed by plastic waste. During the workshop, students can learn about
different plastic processing techniques such as injection molding, blow molding, extrusion,
thermoforming, rotational molding, and compression molding. They can also learn about the
properties of different plastic materials and how to select the appropriate plastic processing technique
based on the desired product characteristics, production volume, and cost considerations. Overall, a
plastic processing workshop can be an excellent opportunity for individuals to gain a deeper
understanding of the plastic processing industry and the role it plays in modern manufacturing. It can
help students develop new skills and knowledge that they can apply in their work and contribute to the
development of sustainable plastic processing practices.
