2023 EVRAA meet opens in Tacloban City

The region’s highly anticipated sports event, the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletics Association
(EVRAA) Meet 2023 that was co-hosted by Schools Division of Leyte and Tacloban City officially opened
at the Leyte Sports Development Center on April 25, 2023.

Wearing their colors to represent their respective divisions, student athletes, accompanied by
their coaches, as well as the government and DepEd officials, joined the parade held around and within
the grounds of LSDC.

The Governor of the province of Leyte Carlos Jericho Petilla led the opening with some
governors and mayors from the different parts of the region.

Petilla mentioned that all the games in the EVRAA is a competition among all the divisions, but
most of all, it is a preparation to be able to work as one in competing for the Palarong Pambansa.

Another message from the City Mayor Alfred Romualdez was delivered by his representative, the
City Committee on Education Maria Elvira Casal.

On his message, he said, “Games are designed to inculcate the values of discipline, sportsmanship,
unity and promotion of nationalism , as well as humility.”

Before the official declaration of the 2023 EVRAA Meet, DepEd Regional Director Evelyn Fetalvero
gave emphasis on what Vice President and DepEd Secretary mentioned in her speech about the
MATATAG Basic Education Agenda that promotes leaner’s well-being, inclusive education and positive
learning environment.

Moreover, Fetalvero highlighted that this EVRAA Meet teaches us to persevere, work together as a
team and show respect and appreciation to the opponents.

“Let’s cheer on our fellow athletes, support each other, and make this 2023 EVRAA a very
memorable one”, she added.
