Project Title: DOSTv: Science For The People

Project Synopsis: DOSTv is the official Science and Technology (S&T) content creator
of the Department of Science and Technology managed by the Science and
Technology Information Institute (STII) that produces programs, knowledge products,
and services on S&T for the benefit of the people.

 Overview and Summary: (500 words)

The Department of Science and Technology has been referred to as the “government’s
best-kept secret,” and national surveys confirm the low awareness by the public of its
programs and activities except for its disaster-related information from DOST-PAGASA
and DOST-PHIVOLCS as well as the scholarship programs under DOST-Science
Education Institute.

Hence, in May 2016, the DOST-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-
STII) created DOSTv as its official source of DOST and science-based news and
information for the benefit of the people via online and broadcast media. Through
DOSTv, we were able to bring DOST to the people’s consciousness with a reputation of
bringing science closer to the people.

A year after its cyberspace debut in 2016, DOSTv aired over the state channel, PTV-4,
and a cable network, Global News Network, featuring different segments to raise
awareness of and appreciation for DOST science-related programs and activities.

In 2019, DOSTv innovated and launched a talk show on Radyo Pilipinas 1 (DZRB 738
AM) called “DOSTv sa Radyo” which ran until March 2020, and “Siyensikat: Pinoy
Popular Science Para sa Lahat,” a telemagazine program on GMA News TV featuring
success stories that made a powerful difference in people’s lives because of science.

In 2020, operations ceased resulting in a hiatus on TV and radio airing due to the
pandemic, but DOSTv quickly pivoted to produce and broadcast content digitally with its
programs called “DOST Report,” “Expertalk Online,” and “Bantay Bulkan” (Volcano
Watch).

In 2021, DOSTv launched “Animagham,” an animation science program for children.

“Siyensikat” also had a comeback on Television via CNN Philippines.

Since DOSTv’s launch, DOST-STII has noted a steady increase in S&T awareness
among Filipinos from 6% in 2017, 13% in 2018, 18% in 2019, 23% in 2020, 24.5% in
2021 and 44% in 2022. While there may be no supporting data directly correlating
DOSTv to the steady rate of increase in awareness increase, the good performance of
DOSTv shown in recent viewership ratings cannot be discounted.

DOSTv programs on CNNPH garnered an average of 893K to 904K reach (total number
of viewers who watched at least 1 minute) and 106K to 162K ratings (average number
of people watching per minute) from 2021 to 2022.
Additionally, DOSTv generated a huge presence on social media, with 9M reach, 2.2M
minutes viewed, and 1.6M engagements on Facebook in 2022. The YouTube Channel
also tripled its subscribers from 5K in 2021 to 18K in 2022.

DOSTv earned public recognitions such as the Anak TV Awards (2018 and 2019); one
(1) Gold and two (2) Silver Anvil Awards in 2019; and a Major Awardee as the
“Gandingan ng Kaunlaran: Most Development-oriented Radio/TV/Online Platform” in
2020 and 2022, among others. Significantly, DOSTv merited inclusion to NEDA’s
National Priority Plan in 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 for its significant
contribution toward a more science-based national culture.

Today, more than 2,200 DOSTv episodes are also available on-demand through its
official website (www.dostv.ph) and on social media sites such as Facebook, and
YouTube.
