Name four (4) S & T developments that you think benefit everyday life in Philippine society the
most, provide examples and a brief (4-5 sentence) explanation for each.

1. Electricity

In our modern way of life, we are always surrounded by one of the most important S &T
innovations that have been created, electricity. It is a force of energy that revolutionizes
societies to what are they now and propels technological advancements of materials and
products that hold necessary and beneficial value to people such light bulbs, electric stoves,
smartphones, and other electric appliances and devices. Also, with the help of electricity, people
are able to use quicker and more efficient means of transportation, to enjoy forms of
amusement like radio, television, and cinema, and to experience the products from the fields of
medicines and surgery too. In the year 2017, Philippines, alone, have the total electrical energy
consumption of about 94.4 billion kilowatt hours (Sanchez, 2020).

2. Vaccines

Vaccine is an important S & T development and one of the most important public health
advances that the people have been using for decades because it protects people from serious
illness and complications of vaccine – preventable diseases which could lead to further worse
health conditions of a person, or even worse, death. At the end of the, vaccines for smallpox,
rabies, plague, cholera, and typhoid vaccines are created by the end of the 19 th century and
made available to the masses (Immunization Action Coalition , 2019). Vaccination of available
vaccines lowers infection rates of vaccine – preventable diseases, and helps in preventing
outbreaks of severe communicable diseases that could easily spread to other children or to
people with weakened immune systems. Vaccination programs in the Philippines have
eradicated Polio since October 2000, and lessen cases of measles all throughout the country
(DOH, n.d.).

that become an important part of people’s production and lifestyle, which transformed almost
everything about the people’s way of life. From transportation, education, information storage,

printing, and GPS, that help humans to easily and efficiently accomplish their everyday tasks.
The use of digital technology in the Philippines through internet – capable devices from desktop
computers to mobile smartphones and internet TV has dubbed the Philippines as the “text

(Sanchez, 2020). In addition, due job loss during the quarantine lockdown in the Philippines
because of COVID – 19, Filipinos have relied to digital technology to look for income sources
that could sustain their family for the time being.

4. Vehicles

Regardless of location, lifestyle, work, or other factors in the society, vehicles have an
integral role for the societies and people in order to move towards modernity and technological
advancements. Vehicles have transformed in complement in the needs of the society during a
particular period of time like wagons, carriages and carts were used during Middle Ages and
Renaissance, and after steam engine was invented, steam and electric – powered vehicles are
also created to suit the industrial society. The blueprint of the modern – day vehicles comes
from the invention of the gas – powered automobile that also marked the beginning of the
vehicular evolution (Drive Safely, 2020). Vehicles are used to transport people from one place to
another, to increase globalization and interconnectedness of societies and people, to use in
businesses and work, to deliver goods and product, and sometimes, it is used for education and
assistance during emergency situations. In Philippines, vehicles are primarily used in rail and
