Reinforcing Steel Bar

The document discusses reinforcing steel bars used in concrete structures. It provides information on types and grades of reinforcing steel bars according to Philippine standards, with varying yield strengths. Commonly available bar diameters range from 10mm to 32mm, and lengths from 6m to 12m. The document then presents a sample problem calculating the required cutting lengths of reinforcing steel bars for a 5m x 5m square concrete footing reinforced with 16 pieces of 20mm diameter bars in each direction. The provided solution shows the cutting length is 5.289m, with a bar order list and excess bar calculation. Finally, the document gives a sample problem to calculate the length of lateral ties for a 500mm x 500mm square

REINFORCING

STEEL BAR
TYPES OF REINFORCING STEEL BARS (Philippine Standard)
1) STRUCTURAL GRADE,Yield Strength = 230 MPa

2) INTERMEDIATE GRADE,Yield Strength = 275 MPa

3) HIGH STRENGTH GRADE,Yield Strength = 414MPa

Commercially Available Diameter of RSB
10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 28mm, 32mm, 36mm
Special order : 40mm and above

Commercially Available Length of RSB

6m, 7.50m, 9m, 10.50m and 12m

PROBLEM:
The 5m x 5m combined square footing is shown below. It is
reinforced with 16 – 20mm diameter main bars in each direction, use
concrete cover = 75mm. Determine the required cutting length of the RSB.
Make tables of bar cutting list, excess bar list and bar order list.
Given:
5000mm x 5000mm footing
16pcs x 2 = 32pcs – 20mm diameter RSB; Db = 20mm
Concrete cover = 75mm

Required:
Cutting length, LT
For RSB diameter between 10 to 25mm,
Bend Diameter, D = 6Db

Bend Diameter, D =6 * 20 = 120mm

For 180 degrees standard bend,
l1 = 4Db

l1 = 4 * 20 = 80mm
l2 = π(D+Db) / 2

l2 = π(120+20) / 2
l2 = 219.91mm
l3 = (Length of footing)/2 – concrete cover – bar diameter – (bend diameter)/2
l3 = 5000/2 - 75mm - 20mm – 120/2

l3 = 2345mm
Cutting length, LT = 2 (l1+ l2+ l3)
LT = 2 (80 + 219.91 + 2345)

LT = 5289.82mm say 5.29m

Wt per meter = Unit weight of steel * area of cross-section

Wt per meter = 7850 kg/m3 * π(0.020m)2 / 4

Wt per meter = 2.47 kg/m

LATERAL TIES
Given:
500mm x 500mm column
Concrete cover = 40mm
Lateral ties diameter = 10mm

Required :
Length of lateral tie
Solution:
Since square column,
A=B
A = 500 - concrete cover *2 – dia of lateral ties *2

A = 500 – 40*2 -10*2

A = 400mm

L = 2 (A + B) + 20 (dia of lateral ties)

L = 2 (400 + 400) + 20 (10)
L = 1800mm
