Products and processes are becoming more and more complex. Siemens provides solutions for
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) that takes into account all aspects from the concept
development to the end of product life and enables development, production and market launch
of successful products.
Siemens' holistic approach is to transform a traditional value chain into an integrated product and
production life cycle: beginning with product design and production planning followed by
production technology and finally production and services.
Only a complete digitalized business model with a constant digital thread has the force and

WinCC consists of two components that can be expanded with options.
Engineering system
Engineering System is the software used for all the configuring tasks needed to create a user
interface for operator control and monitoring of machines and plants.
Runtime
WinCC Runtime is the software for process visualization on the HMI device.
You execute the project in process mode with the Runtime.
Runtime options
The Runtime can be expanded with optional functions (licenses).
The Runtime options depend on the target system that is used. For an HMI device that does not
support a particular optional functionality, the corresponding option cannot be configured.
Not all the options available today are offered for the TIA Portal.

Engineering System of WinCC is modular software available in several editions.
The edition determines which HMI devices of the SIMATIC HMI range can be configured.

A created process tag only becomes a PowerTag when it is used in a configured picture
(I/O fields, parameters of graphic objects, trends, etc.) or for process value archiving.
Changing WinCC Runtime Advanced version / WinCC Professional version

If the maximum number of PowerTags is exceeded, the Runtime version must be upgraded.
The existing configuration does not have to be changed.
A change to a larger Runtime version is possible with a "Powerpack".

Three license levels are available for Engineering.
While 9 different licenses are available for Runtime.
For WinCC clients there is a separate "Client for Runtime Professional" license.
In addition, there are upgrade packets for upgrading from an older version to V16.
And, there are so-called power packs for upgrading, for example, from 128 PowerTags to
512 PowerTags.

If you order e.g. “WinCC RT Professional V15.1, 128 Power Tags“, you will receive a „WinCC RT
Professional (128) V15.0“ license.

WinCC options require on principle a license!
A separate option for recipes and archiving is available only for PC-based HMI devices.
It is an integrated component of the panel functionality for panels that include this feature.

In this configuration, both the Engineering and Runtime operation take place on the same
computer.
For this reason, both DVDs (WinCC Professional and WinCC Runtime Professional) must be
installed and licensed.

In this configuration, the Engineering takes place on the computer 1.
The Runtime runs on computer 2.
On computer 1, only the "WinCC Runtime Professional" DVD has to be installed.
On computer 2, only the "WinCC Professional" DVD has to be installed.

WebNavigator
There are now two options for implementing web clients.
One of them is the "WebNavigator". Only a few limitations (ODK functions are not supported)
exist for the web clients.
A small installation is needed here on the web client. This can be carried out the first time a
connection is established with the web server. Internet Explorer must be used on the web client.
Web UX
This option has been released for WinCC Professional since V14. The advantage of this option is
that it does not require an installation on the client. Because this option is based on HTML 5, any
HTML 5-capable browser can also be used.
The supported functions are listed in the help. In the case of WebUX not all graphic objects and
no C scripts at all are yet supported.

What is licensing?
It takes the form of a license key that is delivered on a copy-protected USB stick .
The license key activates a particular part of the software for use.
License models
Each WinCC software requires a license.
When a software package is purchased, a specific license agreement is obtained in hard

copy in each case. The license authorizes installation and use of the purchased software on a PC
or HMI device.
With the exception of WinCC Basic, an associated licensing USB stick accompanies every
license agreement. The licensing USB stick contains the corresponding license key.
For installation and configuring of client/server concepts or a service/diagnostics concept
(Sm@rtServer), a license is required for each HMI device involved.

1.6.1. Licensing of software components

Service program: Automation License Manager
This license key has to be transferred from the licensing medium to the target device
(Engineering PG/PC or HMI device) using the service program. This service program is a
component of the Engineering software:

1.6.2. Without licensing

In the case of a device replacement (e.g. due to a defect), it is possible that a corresponding
licensing is not immediately available.
Principle of Runtime licenses

If you do not have the necessary licensing for WinCC, the operability of the software is limited:
Messages (indicating the missing license) that require acknowledgement will appear regularly on
the screen. The HMI device is still functional, however.
Principle of Engineering licenses

When Engineering is started, the automatic activation of a 14-day trial is offered.
The Engineering software has an emergency licensing that can be activated. This is
intended to bridge the gap of such service times.
→ Validity: 14 days!
