Battle Group Cursarius (a Calixian Military Formation)

Written by Adam France

Commander in Chief -
Lord-General Mainin Frantry commands the roving Imperial Guard formation Battle Group
Cursarius which is tasked with rooting out pirato-renegades as well as chaos infiltrations and
unsurrections in Calixis Sector.

Frantry is a junior scion of one of the illustrious Cruiser Clans of Battlefleet Calixis, the
Angevin-era space nobility with a near stranglehold on the fleet's senior ranks and prominent
vessels. To further the Clan's interests some Frantry individuals are placed into senior Adeptus
and Mainin was assigned to the IG. During his 17 year tenure as a General (including 4 as
Lord General) he has gained 3 substantial planetary holdings for his Clan, priceless loot and
ensured further Clan influence at the Lucid Palace.

As a Cruiser Clan scion, Frantry acts as if the IG is beneath him and prefers the void-borne
journey to the dirt-side campaign. He is however a gifted commander with a good grasp of
motivations, a fine duellist (and has risen in rank twice through 'fortunate' duels) and a careful
ability to always have an equal and opposing force counter each of his subordinates. His
weaknesses are an extreme distrust of his peers and a ruthless ability to frame, blackmail or
eliminate rivals for his next promotion. He also acts to further the interests of his Clan with
Imperium resources and sees no sense of conflict. His high regards for void craft usually
means that little ground artillery support is provided, Frantry prefers to use orbital
bombardment and Navy fighter participation.

Command Staff -

Quartermagister Greyll, a  former Administratum minor functionary running maglev

scheduling, he has been co-opted and promoted to great heights yet remains a dry, ascetic
and pedantic figure in contrast to the colour of the rest of Frantry' s command staff. His lack of
military knowledge is offset by his ability to track and micro-manage the Group's entire logistics
chain.

Prognistacator-General Wissen commands the senior strategists of the Torquetum, a

combined force of IG strategist staff officers,  intelligencer spies, noble military historians,
Adeptus Mechanicus data-loomists,  and the sanctioned psykers who manipulate the Opal
Armillary in the LG's command crawler.

Arbites Judge Raphen commands a Divisio Immoralis strike squad that goes on to
enemy-held territory to begin the elimination of key collaborators.

Colonel Linnaeus commands an elite guerilla force who are skilled in bringing civilians into
well-schooled resistance fighters to serve alongside his hardened Pardoner force of former
pirates turned loyalists. The core of his force is made up by 8 operatives of the Ordo
Sabatorum. Linnaeus co-operates closely with Raphen in the early stages of a campaign.

Magos Kriv-Arnas commands 3 Legio Cybernetica maniples. Two of these maniples are used
as shock troops to stiffen elite troops that become over-reached and as morale boosters. The
last maniple is the LG's personal guard as the AdMech remains outside of the internecine
fighting of the IG and the battle robots are unimpeachable. The maniples are beloved by the
troops even though the troops grimly realise they are less valuable than the ancient war
machines.

Lord Commissar Gardine is a tough veteran who is nonetheless supportive and largely
amenable to Frantry. Firstly, Frantry is astute in having an Arbites judge in his command team.
Not only does that mean there are two potential areas of legal expertise but two conflicting
areas of jurisdiction. Gardine has no appetite for being lined up by an Arbites firing squad for
being over zealous. Secondly, Gardine has followed Frantry through two promotions and, as a
rising star, Frantry can help Gardine's promotion chances. Thirdly, Gardine could benefit in
retirement from Frantry's 'patronage'. Lastly, Frantry does run a tight force and does not
tolerate indiscipline outside of his favoured units. Gardine has plenty to focus on in a large
Battle Group and rationalises that a little selectiviness is all for the good of an effective Battle
Group and therefore for the good of Calixis Sector.

Intendant-Requisitioneer Brindle commands 3 related forces - the feared Tributaries who loot
to order to further the LG's prestige networks with well chosen tribute, the Requistados who lay
claim to all items of military value for the 'duration of the campaign' and to the Foundlings who
bring the new recruits into the command.

Chief of Staff Lottar Frantry is the nephew of Mainin Frantry and he represents the interests
of the Clan, ensuring that the divisional IG hierarchy do not propose actions that could harm
Clan interests. Lottar also controls a small Direct Action team of veteran snipers and assassins
drawn from Clan holdings across Calixis. This team is employed to 'protect' Frantry from his
rivals. They also act as a bodyguard to counter the unlikely threat from the Maniple (although
the reverse is more likely to be true).

regiment assigned to Cursurius due to its high mobility requirements. This regiment is a
sinecure for Calixian nobles with a virtual guarantee of little danger but Frantry's assurances to
ensure it has an overstated representation in Group honours and records. Frantry has gained
many powerful allies through helping sons achieve fame (however ill-deserved) and moving
into influential positions elsewhere in Calixis.
