What is Media and Cultural Studies?

Media and cultural studies basically try to harmonize the way

viewers/readers think about reality in everyday cultural life. The
existence of pictures and writings in newspapers, television, films, videos,
radio, advertisements, and so on, can affect how we determine or define
our identity and the environment around us which varies and differs from
one another. This is referred to as a "media saturated world", when
human life has been mediated by the mass media so that it influences the
way we see, view, understand and behave towards social reality.
Media and Communication
Media communication is communication that takes place when
mediated by a medium in the form of tools between the source of the
message and the recipient of the message.
Communication media as a way of mediating communication in modern
society which always relies on tools (computers and handphone) as an
increase in production and distribution as well as reception of personal
messages and mass communication. The more sophisticated tools in
communication make the media the fastest way to get messages or
information.
Based on the technology or media used, it is
divided into 4 generations:

Cultural Studies
Barker’s book Cultural Studies: Theory and Practices, divide the definition of cultural
studies into four elements:
• First, cultural studies is an interdisciplinary study meaning the perspective of
disciplines used to explain culture and power.
• Second, cultural studies is concerned with all practices, institutions and systems
classification that occurs in the community by paying attention to cultural values
certain beliefs, and their certain habitual forms of action.
• Thirth, Cultural studies argue over and question in terms critical various forms of
power include, gender race and etc.
• Fourth, Cultural studies are not only academic discipline, but are also trying to
establish outside academic relationships with social and political movements or
changes.
Gender and Culture
In a general sense it can be said that every culture has a clear image of how men and women
should act. People's belief system on gender is more on the assumption that the truth is
acceptable in part because people's beliefs in a society are not always able to point out
accurate and true truths. It may contain error in delivering an interpretation. However, not all
aspects are dealt with masculine are labeled for men, and feminine lebel for women is
acceptable and enforceable in the life of a society. Even so the views of gender should never be
confused with the concept of gender it is taken for granted (natural). Because this biological
entity cannot be interchangeable freely between men and women, because it is a gift and a
destiny from birth in the world.
Ideology and Culture
As a popular culture, which gets more attention in cultural and media studies,
"media" is one of the terrain in which popular culture forms. To understand
the power and awareness of media culture, there are two concepts that are
often used in the cultural and media technology. Both concepts that are
commonly used are ideologies and hegemonic. The concept of ideology is
more likely to mesh with an petapeta of meaning that pretences to the
universal value of truth. In fact it is more specific notions that fortify or
perpetuate power. For example, "the meaningful transmission of television
media news explains the world in the framework of nations, and perceived as'
natural 'objects, by blurring the division of classes in formation (Barker,
2000: 10).
