Material Science Laboratory

BSME 3-2 Topic 1: Nature of Materials

In the report, there were three experiment videos provided - the crystalline experiment,
the make-your-own geode experiment, and the reinforced concrete experiment. These videos
can be used as a lab activity and will be analyzed and summarized in this reaction article.
The crystalline experiment video demonstrated how to create a crystal using alum, hot
water, and food coloring. It showed the process of crystallization where a solid is formed in an
organized structure from a liquid or gas solution. The make-your-own geode experiment video
showed how minerals form in geological processes and how geodes might form in nature by using
eggshells, salt, food coloring, and boiling water. The easy reinforced concrete experiment video
demonstrated how to create a concrete slab using cement, sand, water, and gravel, and how
steel rebar can reinforce concrete to make it stronger and more durable.
These experiment videos provide a practical and engaging way for students to learn about
the nature of materials in Materials Science and Engineering for ME. The crystalline experiment
video highlights the importance of crystalline structures in the production and properties of many
materials such as metals, minerals, and polymers. The DIY geode experiment video explains how
minerals form through geological processes, which is crucial for understanding the formation of
rocks and minerals and their properties and applications. The basic reinforced concrete
experiment video shows the necessity of strengthening in making solid and lasting materials
required to construct structures and goods that can withstand various forces and stresses.
Using these experiment videos, students can practice laboratory skills like measuring and
mixing ingredients, following procedures, and observing and documenting outcomes.
Additionally, the videos provide insight into the scientific method, which involves developing
hypotheses, designing experiments, gathering data, and reaching evidence-based conclusions.
In conclusion, integrating these experiment videos into the laboratory class activities in
Materials Science and Engineering for ME can give students a more comprehensive and engaging
learning experience. The videos illustrate the significance of crystalline structures, mineral
formation, and reinforcement in developing strong and long-lasting materials while also allowing
students to practice laboratory skills and learn about the scientific method.
