Good morning, sir! Good morning ABM.
So my report is about 3 of the Mindanao
Contemporary Artists who used Indigenous
materials in their works.
I am proud to present—Rameer Tawasil,
Saudi Ahmad, and Bert Monterona. They
are visual artists who are praised not only
for their talents but also the innovative ways
they use indigenous materials to create
artworks that are uniquely Filipino.
First let’s have Rameer Tawasil
 He was born in 1969 in the town of
Kalinggalan Caluang, Sulu
 a painter who studied Architecture at
the Western Mindanao State
University from 1987 to 1992.
 He has a collection called the poetry
of the sea, and later we will discuss
this further
 Next, he uses vibrant and bold
colors; he also applies indigenous
muslim motifs by the okirs of the
maranaos
 Then, subjects are often about rich
cultural heritage of the Filipino
Muslims

His works are very popular to art

 Lastly, his paintings are exhibited in
the Philippines, United Kingdom,
Germany, USA, Malaysia, and South
Korea

“Poetry of the sea” Vinta has always
been an iconic symbol of
Zamboanga. Kalat daw ito sa
siyudad pero to see a real one is far
less likely. And ito yung gustong
baguhin ng collection na ginawa ni
tawasil, the poetry of the sea hopes
to create a revival of the colorful
vintas

a boat.
 Let’s now proceed to some of the
works of rameer tawasil
Next, we have Saudi Ahmad
 He was born in the town of Sibugay,
Zamboanga
 He is considered to be the one of
Mindanao’s greatest painters—as his
works have been displayed in many
exhibits here and abroad. In addition
to that, yung mga gawa niya ay
nabibili na kahit hindi pa tapos
 Next, his works are inspired by the
rich culture and tradition of the
Filipino Muslims
  His subjects are often genre paintings
of community life, with his figures
garbed in colorful and detailed
costumes
 Next, ang Sibugay provincial
government yung nagsubmit ng
name niya to be considered for the
national artists award
 And last, siya yung nagimbento ng
subtraction technique.

 Let’s now proceed to some of his

niyang ipakita ang Muslim tribes as

perception that they are prone to
violence.
Lastly, we have Bert Monterona
 He was originally from Iligan City
but is now based in Vancouver,
Canada
 His works are known all over the
world for his use of color, human
figures, symbols, and motifs that
cannot deny his Filipino Heritage.
 As stated a while ago, he is a
filipino-canadian artist. Despite that,
he admits that lahat ng works niya
are heavily influenced by his
indigenous roots and he also stated
that all artists should all retain what
he calls “basic native creativity” at
yung paggamit ng local materials sa
paggawa ng art dahil para sa kanya,
iyon ang isang paraan upang ang
isang artist ay maging unique and of
course nationalistic
 He is a mixed media artist. So what
is mixed media artist? Ito ay isang
artist na gumagawa ng artwork in
which more than one medium or
material has been employed
 Tapestry and bamboo paintings
- In tapestry painting, gumagamit
siya ng dye and textile paint. And
his textile paintings depict
Filipino myths and rituals and
yung subjects niya are dressed in
traditional costumes
- Bamboo-stick painting on the
other hand, gumagamit siya ng
textile paint. And gumagamit
siya ng different sizes and widths
ng bamboo as a palette and brush
to create his painting.
 He is also a political artist—
ginagamit niya yung artworks niya to
give commentaries sa mga
napapanahong issue sa lipunan.
Because he believes that as an artist,
trabaho niya at responsibilidad ang
mageducate through art.
 The vanishing people and culture is
one of the examples of his tapestry
paintings
 The community harvest naman isa sa
example ng bamboo stick paintings
 And repression and resistance isa sa
example ng mural painting.
