Question 1
Reflect on your work you've created so far and consider on how your use of materials,
tools, techniques and processes reflect the broader ideas and message that you are interested to
convey. What materials, tools, techniques and processes have you used and how can you employ a
broader range of materials and techniques to explore your theme in Module 3?
Question 2
Reflect upon the audience and method of dissemination for your work. What does it communicate
and who is it communicating to? What does it offer to the viewer/customer/client and their
lifestyle? Where will the work be situated? How can you market your work?
My least favourite question is who is the intended audience of the piece. It's never been
something that I've considered. I do what i do the way i do it because of what it means to
me. Sometimes art is incredibly personal and can hold meaning that might not make sense
to anyone but the person who made it, but that doesn't mean it can be appreciated by
others. The way it is interpreted by a secondary viewer isn't necessarily important to me. I
can appreciate why some artists really emphasise who their art is for and its intended use.
Sometimes i think it's clear and a piece of art will speak for itself. If intended use is
marketing then it makes sense to put a label on it. Everyone who sees art critiques it,
whether publicly or internally, so to me setting a target audience seems pointless. The
people who like it and relate to it will and the people who don't, won't. What i'm trying to
say is it's open to interpretation and people can assign any meaning they want, even if it's
just a case of they like the visual aesthetic.
Question 3
We make, design and produce work to be shared, and to elicit a reaction or provoke a response.
What response would you like to provoke in your Audience/Client/Viewer/User? Are you the kind of
designer/artist/producer who aims to disrupt - to entertain or to question? Is your work ironic,
playful, educational or political? Use this space to think about the response of your target audience
on viewing your work - how do you want them to react? What is an ideal response?
All i want is for my project to be understood. It's hard to say what you want to provoke in
an audience when you aren't sure what it provokes in yourself but if i had to say i think i
would like for this project to make people think about the way they view themselves and
others. I hope it inspires empathy. I would like to think that it could make people be a bit
nicer to themselves. Emotion drives everything that i do and my project is no different. For
me making an emotional statement means more than any political or educational one.
Having the ability to elicit an emotion from an audience creates a community formed on
mutual understanding and that is so important to me.
Task 1 – Part 1
The main theme of my project is the connection between humans and nature. Although it's
a rather simple idea, i think that's where the beauty of it is. The point i'm making with these
photographs is that we are nature. I looked into sentient nature and what this means. We
perceive our own existence and as pieces of walking, talking nature this is an incredible
feat. We are so caught up with external issues and factors that i don't think we ever get to
just be nature. Before the modernity we have now we were just nature. Human makeup
hasn't changed. We have always been and will continue to be nature. This seems like quite
an obvious point but when was the last time you removed yourself from the world we live
in and appreciated the fact that you and the trees and the chimps and the ladybugs are all
part of the same nature. I know that i didn't really think about it until i started looking into
the meanings and links of nature and humanity in module 2.
Digital photography. I want to keep editing minimal as this is my personal preference and i
don't think it is necessary for this shoot.
What skills will you need to develop in order to complete the work?
What will you need to learn? What existing strengths do you have that can help you to succeed?
One skill that i am working on for this project is my time management and planning. In the
past i have felt like rigid plans confine my creativity so i have avoided them altogether. I
recognise that this isn't a smart way of working and admit that it is something that holds
back my personal process. Using my alternative planning methods in an academic setting
has been scary as it's not what we are told to do.
I'm also working on not giving up on my ideas. Whilst this might not seem like a skill, it is
for me. Being able to trust that what i'm doing isn't pointless or stupid has been really hard
for me throughout this course and it has pushed me down and made me struggle. Although
i changed my idea at the start of the research stage, this commitment to an idea has been a
big learning curve for me.
What will you do to sustain your practice and to develop your motivation,
understanding and confidence?
This focus of this question is your research practice - what has already inspired, informed and
influenced you? How can you push yourself beyond your comfort zone here?
A big part of my process is music. More specifically finding music that fits the theme i'm
following. I make playlists for every project i do, no matter the scale. Having dedicated
songs allows me to stay on track in a way that i enjoy and that is an easy gentle reminder
for me. It also allows me to think about visuals once i have the rest of the concept together.
When i hear the songs from a project playlist out of context, i think about the project and
ways i can improve it or ways to develop ideas. Having mental triggers really help me stay
engaged with what i'm working on.
Task 1 – Part 2
This is a short module - and scheduling your activity and planning out your production arc will
help to ensure that you keep the project on track, with time to make a quality artefact for the
exhibition. The best project concept in the world will not lead to a successful outcome without
good, pragmatic planning. Remember, gathering or "procuring" materials will take time - and
supplier availability and high costs will slow you down and impact on your ability to make work.
You must factor this into your schedule. A prohibitively high cost on a particular material or item
may prompt you to investigate a more easily sourced and cheaper alternative, which can
improve your carbon footprint - and improve the "sustainability" of the project.
Resources, Services and Tools - What will I need and what steps
must be taken to ensure access and availability?
What do you think you will need to complete the project? How can you begin to negotiate access
and co-ordinate your making with availability?
Sustainability
Use this page to identify aspects of your project relating to sustainability, unnecessary waste and
environmental concerns. What might you do to manage this and reduce your impact? If you can’t
manage it directly, could you take action to offset your carbon footprint?
I aim to use either natural materials or things that can easily be recycled. As i plan to shoot
outside i will follow the leave no trace idea, making sure to leave places either as we found
them or cleaner.
Task 1 – Part 2
Project Budget
Please list below any cost or expenditure associated with your project. The aim here is to identify
the actual cost of the work you have made, rather than the projected cost of a proposed
outcome. You do not need to list those materials that are freely available in the studios
(paper/pencils/acrylic paint etc) but do include more specific materials such as fabric, resin,
superglue, neoprene etc. You can add to this list as you progress through the project.
Installation piece .
What will need to be in place in order for you to complete your final
piece and to achieve your ambition and aims?
Project Planning and Scheduling
You cannot pass this module without completing a schedule. You must complete a realistic
project schedule in order to pass the module. An additional and more detailed day by day
schedule on your website will enhance your submission, but you must complete this one first.
