TASK 4 - Initial Project Proposal

Form
Date Set:
w/c 8th January 2024

Review Date:
w/c 12th February 2024

Task 2: Initial Proposal Form

To pass module 2, you must initiate a project based on the acquisition activities and/or elective projects that
tutors set at the start of the module. It is important to understand that there only three supported studio weeks
to refine, interact and complete this project and research which supports this project will be ongoing
throughout the whole module cycle.

Your project must be manageable in a shared studio space which means you must be aware of the Health and
Safety implications, environmental impact and sustainability and have planned for its disposal at the end of the
assessment period. Materials and scale used must be relevant for the shared space and equipment /materials
readily available. You should also plan for any additional purchases of material or equipment form your own
budget.

To help you begin to identify your ambitions for this term, you will need to complete this initial proposal form.
This proposal form helps you to identify the themes, processes and mediums that are inspiring for you and
your development of a creative identity.

There is scope to refine this proposal at a later stage and your personal tutor will give you guidance. However,
to begin, it is important to engage with the prompts in this initial proposal and provide a personal response to
the questions. If you are finding a particular question difficult, it maybe because you have not engaged fully
with the project work on the module so far, or done enough reflection about your own areas of interest.

At the mid module review point, you will share your proposal intention alongside your evolving work on the
Weebly site. The proposal form is a key tool in all project advice sessions or tutorials so spend time working
on this initial proposal to get the most opportunity for feedback.

You must load this initial version of your proposal ahead of mid module review and an additional version
post review acknowledging feedback received and how you have responded to it.

Reflect on the studio work you’ve done so far on the module and consider the emerging
themes, concepts and questions.
What ideas or themes are starting to emerge from the acquisition tasks? What do you hope to
explore/communicate?

Please use this section to talk about the meaning of this project for you at this stage - what themes
or ideas are beginning to emerge? How will you expand upon these?

when working in the last module on the narrative layers project i did a piece on witches, i myself
identify as a witch and practice witchcraft as a spiritual belief system. For this 3 week project i
want to focus on modern day and ancient witchcraft, this project has allot of meaning for me
personally as i believe myself to have decended from a long line of witches and spiritual people.
Witchcraft as a practice is ancient and it sparks from hundreds places and people and there are
many different branches of witchcraft for example voodou is a practice that origionates from
dahomey which is an ancient kingdom that is now nigeria, benin and togo, i do not practice this
branch of witchcraft as it is a closed practise of covens i do not belong to. I do however practice
paganism and more specifically wicca which is a pre-christian religion based in europe. we worship
the earth and premordial gods and godesses such as the norse god and godess sol and mani who
represent the sun and moon or more specifically were believed to drive the sun and moon up and
down the sky giving us day and night. Tapestries have historically been used in different religeons
to tell stories through the art of weaving, for this 3 week project i want to create a painted tapastry
to tell a story from my religion that has meaning for me and is educational to people who dont
know allot about my craft, i want to incorperate symbolism into this peice and i want to use
mythology to tell the old stories.

How will you research this theme/concept?

Consider how you can build your understanding further by becoming more informed of your
theme/ concept.

Reflect on what do you already know about your emerging theme or concept. How can you deepen
this existing understanding? Are there specific books and interviews, film and exhibitions that will
broaden your understanding? Is there is a contemporary and historical context that surrounds your
theme/concept? Are there suggestions made by your tutors and peers that you can follow up?

For this project i want to research deeper into the mythological stories from the norse pantheon i
will research through the internet first to look more specifically at the story i want to tell and once i
have decided i will look at the uwe library to see if theyhave anything on the story i have chosen or
more on the deitys and people mentioned in the story i will also look through the books i currently
own on witchcraft. I also want to look at works of tapestry that already exist to deepen my
knowledge of the work used to make them and also stories that have already been put onto
tapestries such as the bayeux tapestry and the coventry tapestry. I also want to research symbolism
and runes that are specific to the themes of the story or the deitys in the story.

From a studio perspective, what materials or processes do you need to source, arrange, or
learn to create a wider body of work and exploration?

Alongside identifying the wider themes and questions of your work, consider what materials you
might need to source, digital tools or resources to arrange and learn? Be realistic and reflect on your
time management and organisational skills from this module.
Moving forward, how can you create ways to better organise your workload and time management
to fulfil your potential?

im going to use calico for the body of this work as it is sturdy and perfect fabric for whati want to
create im also going to use mixed edia in this piece but i want to do the majority of the work in
acrylic paint as it is a media i am well versed in and know will work well for what im wanting to do
however i think coloured pencil and pens may be helpful when putting in detail and fine tuning the
creation. for workload and time management i will come onto campus during my independant
study time to work on this and i will also make sure i source everything i need to create my tapastry
early on so i am not delayed by anything important and have the correct tools to build a structured
work day, you cant build a house without the foundations.

How would you like your work to be received?

Is there a specific context that you would like your work to be seen e.g., a magazine, online,
gallery, community, or retail space? Describe the impact that you would like your work to have on
your audience.

I think my work would be best recieved in a gallery, as it is an art piece however i also think it
would do well online as i feel this piece is educational, i want my audience to feel inspired to find
out more about a religion which is not globally recognised i also want my audience to want to know
more about the old stories and mythology that so many people base their beliefs on and maybe
understand more about a religion that many people dont know allot about.

How will you develop this proposal?

We fully anticipate that this proposal will change as you move through the module, and we expect
you to develop a second draft after the mid module review point. Coming back and amending a
project brief is vital in this stage in your learning - as it allows you to manage your expectations
and ambition at the half way point.

Why might you need to revisit your initial concept? How will you know when things are going
well? How will you plan for when you get stuck or for when things get difficult?

I think this piece could also be looked at from a feminist point of view, as a modern day witch and a
feminist i feel angry about the fact so many women got brutally trialed and burned for other
peoples beliefs and wether those women were witches or not the horrors that befelled them were
barbaric and in some places this kind of opression is still happening to people who practise a
beautiful religion onthe ground of other people believing that they are pure evil, This kind of
violence against anyone is inherently wrong and disgusting and i think its so important to fight
against this and have laws in place that protect the right to practise any religion.

How will you plan for the Health and Safety and end-of-life disposal of your project?

How will you minimise the impact of your creative process and ensuing practical or digital work on
others i.e. the studio space? What are the environmental and sustainability impacts of your piece
and the materials and processes used to create it? What is an appropriate scale at this stage in your
study?

to minimise health and safety complications im not going to use any kind of spray paint or aerosol
sprays on this piece as we dont have the proper ventilhation on campus and i dont havent in my
home either, im also goind to follow safety regulation that are in place if i choose to use a sewing
machine for example keeping sleeves out of the way or off the body and tying my hair up, iam also
going tokeep this piece a reasonable size to avoid any trip hazard or interference with my peers
working, i think these rules will make a safe working environment for myself and my peers.
