COURSE YEAR SEC: BSCE-2C SCORE: ______________

Direction: Put the case for or against your view or idea by giving evidence for your
claims/reasons for or against; attempt to influence the reader to accept your view

In view of Bentham and Mill‘s assertion of the greatest happiness of the greatest
number, do you think that animal rights and welfare should even be a concern in the
Philippines where millions of people below the poverty threshold are struggling to
have decent lives? Is the concern for animal rights and welfare a first world problem?

I think animal rights and welfare must also be a concern but not a first world
problem because we all know that poverty is the main problem in the Philippines that
we must face and think of a solution how to stop poverty in the Philippines or just
Low its percentage.
We must respect and take care of all Living things such as animals because
they have also lives and concern for them is a big check. Animal right and Welfare is
only a small piece of act in the Philippines so let the people in charge to it fulfill their
goals.

Assessment 2
NAME:Bren Lee Jasper B. Manabat DATE: November 22, 2022
COURSE YEAR SEC: BSCE 2C SCORE:

1. Are all pleasures commensurable? Can they be evaluated on a single scale? Can
some goods like friendship, be balanced against other goods like money?
The pleasures of life cannot be measured or compared to one another in any
way, shape, or form. Consider a scenario in which you are contrasting some values,
such as friendship, with money. Although pleasures are comparable, they cannot be
rated on a single scale, it should be highlighted. Trying both and deciding which is
more fun is the only way to compare the two. If the majority of people determine that,
in terms of enjoyment, friendship is preferable to money, then friendship will win out.

2. Mill revises utilitarianism by arguing for “higher” pleasures. Which pleasures are
higher?
General happiness is the sole criterion of morality, and “happiness” is defined
as pleasure. Higher intellectual pleasures are more valuable than lower bodily
pleasures.

3. Mill proposes that higher pleasures are those preferred by the majority of people.
Do you agree that this is a good way of distinguishing between higher and lower
pleasures? Can a well-informed majority prefer higher pleasures?

Yes, it might be, but that doesn't make it true because unanticipated events
can always happen. Life is not simply about having fun; in fact, having fun is a
materialistic ideal. There is also agony and suffering. You'll struggle and make
compromises in life when things isn't going well or when you're aiming for something
difficult but valuable.

4. Does utilitarianism questions individual rights? What if violation the civil rights of
minority increases the sum total of pleasure of the majority?
Utilitarianism fundamentally disregards moral rights. A utilitarian may support
the creation or enforcement of a legal "right" if he believes doing so will lessen
suffering or raise happiness throughout the world. The law is like any other tool (I
have put the word "right" in quotation quotes since a legal right, as opposed to a
moral one, is just a law that allows or forbids anything). You can or cannot use it for
usefulness.
5.Do you agree that happiness is the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain,
and that all actions are directed toward pleasure?
Yes, Because happiness can take us away from stress and pain. Happiness
is more than the pursuit of pleasure. It's not about wanting to be happy; it's about
having a life of satisfaction and fulfillment and, finally, enlightenment, or discovering
the truth, which releases one from all pain.

6. Are all pleasures comparable, even objectionable pleasures? What if the majority
derives pleasure from being sexist?
Yes it is the same. It is the same when they are both considered and has the
same act. It has negative effects on the other party when sexist comments, sexist
acts, and other similarly offensive forms of pleasure-inducing behavior are involved.
However, the act-taker's satisfaction remains constant.

7. Is it justifiable to build a basketball court because there are basketball fans, than to
build a hospital because there are fewer sick people?
No,you cannot just build a basketball court just because you are a “fan”. You
can borrow courts to play or even watch your favorite players play on court. Building
a hospital is much prior because it is for the sick and can save lives unlike building a
basketball court for pleasures.

8. When is it justifiable to torture suspected criminals?

In the first place, Torture is not allowed, there is a alloted law and
consequences for those suspects, killers and criminals. We cannot put the Law on
our hands, let the government do their job and wait for the result.
