Do inventions really help us?

Technological inventions have driven our world

to a rapid development in recent years.
Population living all over the world has been
interested in using these profound technological
achievements in order to increase their living
standards but some discoveries has also proved
to be less appealing in society.

Inventions do make our lives easier. Discovery

of the smart phone has enabled us to
communicate effectively and socialize with close
relations no matter how far they live away from
you. Inventions such as cars, trains have
revolutionized the way we travel making
maximum use of the limited time available in
one's life. In my opinion, scientists have
managed to make inventions that would fulfill
expectations of the society to an extent but have
failed to find a way that could contribute
towards the country's sustainable development
and make them eco-friendly.

I would like to consider the electric car as the

best invention made recently. It has built in
features that you could drive the car up to 130
miles per hour by only powering it up with a
power adapter connected to a domestic
electrical socket. Some cars even have self
driving capabilities as an added advantage. This
discovery has led to a giant leap in reducing
emissions of harmful gases at the same time
providing the urban dwellers a satisfying
journey. The government has also taken major
steps such reducing taxation for electric vehicles
making them more affordable for consumers.

Virtual reality headsets can be considered as

one of the worst inventions of all time. Although
it has great benefits in architecture and space
travel many people have realized it as an
opportunity of getting away from your current
state. It is too widely used in modern
entertainment field and many children have a
greater attraction towards it. But many research
has proved that it has a negative effect on eyes
and its excessive usage could lead to brain
damage. Many accidents even death has been
reported because people who use VR technology
in their day to day life are less informed by the
surrounding circumstances.

Scientists should be determined in making

inventions having the least negative impact on a
local culture and the eco-system while satisfying
human needs
Willliam Skidelsky reviews David Papineau’s
new book, in which sport meets philosophy.

David Papineau is an eminent philosopher and a

passionate lover of sport. For much of his life,
he has kept two spheres separate, fearing that to
mix them would produce a double negative in
his readers’ appreciation of his work;
philosophy robbed off his seriousness and sport
of its excitement
