History and development of basketball

The game basket ball was originated from America. It was introduced in 1891 by
Dr. James Naismith, who was then the physical education director at the Y. M.C.A
College in spring field, Massachusetts. It was design as a game to develop interest
in the gymnasium.
The ball used in basketball is played with a net attached to a ring suspended by an
upright with backboard. It became an Olympic event in 1936 held in Berlin.
Basketball was introduced into Nigeria by American soldiers after the Second
World War in the early 1950’s. The controlling body, Nigeria Basketball
Association (NBA) was formed in 1965.
Today basketball is played by men and women, boys and girls in schools from
primary schools to universities as well as in clubs.

The court: it is a concrete-surface rectangular space measuring 28m in length
and 15m in width.

above the floor.
The backboard: it measures 1.80m long by 120m wide.
