What is Basketball?

-Basketball is a team sport played


between two teams of five players
each on a rectangular court, usually
indoors.

The Invention of Basketball

- Dr. James Naismith, a physical education


teacher at a YMCA in Springfield, MA invented
the game of basketball to keep his students
active during the cold winter months of
Massachusetts. The game was played with a
peach basket that was nailed to the wall 10 feet
off the ground and a soccer ball. Dribbling was
not originally allowed in the game.

The First Official Game

-The first official basketball game was played at


a YMCA in Albany, New York with 9 players.
The final score of the game was 1-0.

between Hamline University and the University

- Peach baskets were used until 1901, when the


modern hoop was invented with a metal rim, a

- It was not until the late 1950's when Tony


Hinkle invented the more visible orange-rubber
basketball that is used today.

- Once the manufacturing of basketballs became


universal, the technique of dribbling was
implemented as the basketballs were more
consistently shaped.

The ABA-NBA Merger

- An upstart organization, the American


Basketball Association, emerged in 1967 and
briefly threatened the NBA's dominance until
the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. Today the NBA
is the top professional basketball league in the
world in terms of popularity, salaries, talent, and
level of competition. This created the NBA we
know today.

Basketball ring
- The basket consists of a ring and a net.
The rings were made of hard iron and the
diameter of the rings was 45 centimeters.
The ring height is 305 centimeters from the
floor surface and is installed on the surface
of the basketball board with a distance of 15
centimeters. Meanwhile, the net is hung
from the ring, with a net length of 40
centimeters.
Basketball
- Basketball is a tool that must be in the game of basketball.
- The size of the ball must match the conditions of the game. The sizes of basketball that
suit the class are:
- Ball size 7 for ages 14 up to boy seniors
- Ball size 6 for ages 14 up to girl seniors
- Ball size 5 for boys and girls aged 13 and under

- The ball material is made of rubber and covered by synthetic leather or it can be
rubber.
- Ball weights are in the range of 600 grams to 650 grams.
- The pressure on the ball ranges from 4.26 to 4.61 psi and if it is bounced from a height
of 180 cm to the floor then the ball will bounce to a height of 120 cm to 140 cm (not to
exceed 140 cm).
 
Basketball Board
-The basketball board is made of 3 cm thick
wood or of a suitable transparent material, such
as acrylic or plastic glass. The basketball board
is 180 centimeters long and 120 centimeters
wide.

-The board is 275 centimeters high from the


floor surface to the bottom of the board and is
120 centimeters perpendicular to the distance
from the center point of the finish line of the
court.
Basketball Court

- It is a rectangle with
dimensions of 28 meters
long and 15 meters wide as
measured from the edge of
the boundary line. In a
basketball court, there are
several dividing lines such as
the three-point zone
semicircle line and the free-
throw line.
Scoreboard

- Scoreboard displays the time left in the


period and running scores of the both
team. A scoreboard can be either digital or
manual.

WHAT ARE THE BASIC SKILLS IN
BASKETBALL ?
Dribbling
- Dribbling is an important skill for all
basketball players. This skill will allow you to
move up and down the court, maneuver past
defenders and execute plays. Proper dribbling
requires ball-handling skills and knowledge of
how to spread your fingers for ball control. It
is also best if you know how to dribble equally
well with both hands.
Dribbling
- Variants of dribbling include the low control,
the crossover, between-the-leg, behind-the-
back, the reverse dribble, and the speed dribble
Shooting
- In order to score points in basketball,
you need to shoot the ball into the
hoop. This requires the ability to
properly hold and throw the ball into
the air toward the basket while avoiding
defenders. A proper shot requires
precise aiming, arm extension and lift
from the legs.
Shooting
-Variants of shooting techniques
include the set shoot, the lay-up, the
underhand shot, the jump shot the hook
shot and the dunk shot.
Passing
-Passing is another skill that when mastered can help
you become a complete basketball player. Basketball is
a team sport that involves finding a teammate who is
open for a shot. The ability to pass the ball to this player
can make the difference between scoring and not
scoring. Really great passers are an important part of a
basketball team and usually the ones who set up scoring
plays.

- Variants of passing include the chest pass, bounce pass,


the overhead pass, the outlet pass, and the behind-the-
back pass.
