History, Equipment and Court Dimension of Basketball

1. History of Basketball
 The basketball was invented on 1981 by James Naismith.
 During March 11, 1892 was the First Public game of Basketball was ever played.
 During March 22, 1893 was the First Women Basketball game was ever played.
 In the year 1895, the field goal and free throw points of basketball was changed
 In the year 1896, the first professional basketball game was introduced, and also the
First intercollege basketball game on 18th day of January
 College of basketball was organized during in the year of 1901
 There became a national title in the year of 1904.
 From the year of 1905 to 1910, African American college was urge to create a
governing body before it was too late until it finally did and formed the
Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
 In the year of 1908, Double dribble was invented.
 In the year of 1909, it has stated that fouls is not qualified from the game.
 In the year of 1910, Double dribble is banned.
 During the year of 1913, there was a throw-in.
 During the year of 1914, all the rules of basketball had changed.
 On January 1, 1915, from not dribbling and shooting was changed and allowed to
dribbling and shooting.
 On August 7, 1936, Basketball was then internationally introduced to Olympics.
 On the month of June 6, 1936, the Basketball Association of America League to
Olympics.
2. Equipment
 The Ball-For practicing, For practicing, one can play with a rubber play. For
professional competitions, one needs to use an inflated ball made of leather
 29.5 to 30 inches in circumference for men’s game.
 28.5 inches in circumference for women’s game.
 Should weigh 18 to 22 ounces.
 When bounced off, it reaches 6ft. from the floor.
 When inflated, it should bounce to 49 to 54 inches in height.
 The Shoes- one needs specialized shoes when playing basketball.
 Should give better support to the ankle as compared to running shoes.
 Shoes should be high-tipped shoes and provide extra comfort during a
game.
 These shoes are specially designed to maintain high traction on the
basketball.
 The hoop or Basket- a horizontal metallic rim, circular in shape.
 Rim is attached to a net and helps one score a point
 The rim is also mounted about 4 ft. inside the baseline and 10ft. above
the court.
 The Basketball court- the next important thing for shooting balls in this game.
 The court is usually made of wooden floorboard.
 Court size is about 28m x 17m according to international standards
 NBA regulation states the floor dimension as 29m x 15m
 Rectangular in shape and has baskets placed on opposite ends.

 Backboard- a rectangular board that is placed behind the rim.


 Helps give better rebound to the ball.
 About 1800mm in size horizontally and 1050mm vertically.
 It is made of acrylic, aluminium, steel or glass.
 Uniforms/Jersey- the most important requirement of a team, when ones starts
Coaching at basketball.
 A uniform consists of a jersey (shirt), shorts, and numbers on the
front and back of the shirts for identification.
 It helps one teams to differentiate from one another.
 The shot clock- only allowed to have 24 sec. (max) to have a ball in hand in shooting.
 If the offense fails to shoot a ball that hits the rim, they will lose
the possession of the ball to the other team.
3. Dimension
- The length of a basketball court is 28m but can be reduced to 26m for premier, Club and
Community courts where only smaller spaces are available and approximately at 91.86 ft.
- The width of a basketball court is measured at 14m to 15m, approximately 42.21 ft.
- The addition of 2.05m run-offs and 2m for teams and officials on the sideline increases
the total area to 677.31m².- total area of basketball court, 7290.5ft² (both indoor and
outdoor courts).
- Total playing area is 4520.43 ft² (excluding the run-offs and sidelines).
- The mid court would be 14m from each endline base on the court size dimension.
- Based for the opening tip-off, the centre circle has 3.6m diameter. The same diameter for
free throw circle.
- The free throw line, marked 4.6m from the backboard, is the mark at which a player must
stand when shooting free throws.
