HISTORY
Invented in 1891.It has now grown into one of the most
popular sports in the United States.
Keeping students fit Basketball was invented in
December 1891 by Canadian James W. Naismith. An
instructor at the YMCA Training School in Massachusetts,
He formulated 13 rules.
 In 1893, the first women’s game was played at the Smith
College, in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA.
PEACH BASKETS
 Originally, basketball was
played with peach baskets
and balls had to be
retrieved manually after
each score.
 In 1906, the peach baskets
were finally replaced by
metal hoops with
backboards.
ORANGE BALL

Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball.


 The first balls made specifically for basketball were
brown,
in the late 1950s that Tony Hinkle, searching for a ball
that would be more visible to players and spectators
alike, introduced the orange ball that is now in common
use.
GLOBAL POPULARITY INCREASES
In the early 1900s, students from abroad who had
studied in Springfield, started to spread the game.

took place in Chile.
OLYMPIC HISTORY
Basketball made its appearance at the Olympic
Games in 1904 in St Louis as a demonstration sport,
as the competition was held between only American
teams and counted as an event of the Amateur
Athletic Union (AAU of the USA) Championships.
At the Games in 1936 in Berlin, basketball joined the
Olympic programme,
 Women’s basketball debuted at the 1976 Games in
Montreal.
OLYMPIC HISTORY
The USA dominates international basketball and won all the
titles up to 1972, the year it was defeated by the Soviet
Union at the Munich Games.
In the women’s event, the Soviets took gold in 1976, 1980
and 1992, and were later dominated by the Americans
between 1984 and 2008, except in 1992.
In 1992 at the Barcelona Games, famous players from the
National Basketball Association (NBA) were allowed for the
first time to represent the USA. This team, known as the
“Dream Team” in the international media.
 It delighted the public and widely dominated the Olympic
tournament in 1992.
BASKETBALL EQUIPMENT
The most important thing is the ball.
For practicing, one can play with a
rubber ball.
For professional competitions, one
needs to use an inflated ball made of
leather. Official size of a basketball is
29.5 to 30 inches in circumference for
men’s game and 28.5 inches in
circumference for women’s game. It
should weigh 18 to 22 ounces. When
bounced off 6 feet from the floor, a well
inflated ball should bounce 49 to 54
inches in height.
BASKETBALL SHOOTING EQUIPMENT

The hoop or basket is a


horizontal metallic rim, circular
in shape. This rim is attached to
a net and helps one score a
point. The rim is mounted
about 4 feet inside the baseline
and 10 feet above the court.
BASKETBALL BACKBOARD
The backboard is the
rectangular board that is placed
behind the rim. It helps give
better rebound to the ball. The
backboard is about 1800mm in
size horizontally and 1050mm
vertically.
UNIFORM
 the most important
requirement for a team is to
have a uniform. This helps one
differentiate teams from one
another. A uniform consists of
a jersey (shirt), shorts,
numbers on the front and
back of the shirts for
identification.
SHOES
Shoes One needs specialized
shoes when playing basketball.
It should be able to give better
support to the ankle as
compared to running shoes.
The basketball shoes should be
high-tipped shoes and provide
extra comfort during a game.
These shoes are specially
designed to maintain high
traction on the basketball court
SHOT CLOCK
• A shot clock is used in
basketball to quicken the pace
of the game. The shot clock
times a play and provides that a
team on offense that does not
promptly try to score points
loses possession of the ball. It is
distinct from the game clock,
which times the entire game.
WHISTLE
The coach or referee uses a
whistle to indicate the start or
end of a game. He/she can even
use the whistle to stop the play
in the middle of a game.

use the whistle to gather the
