About Service Trainer Contact

JAMES NAISMITH
Born November 6, 1861, Almonte, Ontario,
Canada—

Died November 28, 1939, Lawrence, Kansas, U.S.

Canadian-American physical-education director

who, in December 1891, at the International
Young Men’s Christian Association Training
School, afterward Springfield (Massachusetts)
College, invented the game of basketball.
BASKETBALL HISTORY
The story of how Naismith invented the game through a charge by
Luther Gulick (then the College's physical education superintendent)
to come up with a new indoor activity that could be played by college
students during the long New England winters is well known.

In class discussions, Gulick had stressed the need for a new

indoor game, one “that would be interesting, easy to learn,
and easy to play in the winter and by artificial light.” No one
in the class had followed up on Gulick’s challenge to invent
such a game.

It should provide plenty of exercise, yet

without the roughness of football, soccer, or
rugby since those would threaten bruises and
broken bones if played in a confined space.
HISTORY
Naismith approached the school janitor, hoping he could find two, 18-inch square boxes to use
as goals. The janitor came back with two peach baskets instead. Naismith then nailed them to
the lower rail of the gymnasium balcony, one at each end. The height of that lower balcony rail
happened to be ten feet. A man was stationed at each end of the balcony to pick the ball from
the basket and put it back into play. It wasn’t until a few years later that the bottoms of those
peach baskets were cut to let the ball fall loose.
Much time and thought went into this new creation. It became an adaptation of many games
of its time, including American rugby (passing), English rugby (the jump ball), lacrosse (use
of a goal), soccer (the shape and size of the ball), and something called duck on a rock, a
game Naismith had played with his childhood friends in Bennie’s Corners, Ontario.

High schools and colleges began to introduce the new game, and by 1905, basketball was
officially recognized as a permanent winter sport.
EQUIPMENTS/MATERIALS

BASKETBALL
FARASE
BASKETBALL
BACKBOARD
Is raised board mounted vertically
on top of a pole, serves as the
mounting for the hoop.
NBA reference, the backboard
measures 6 feet wide and 3.5 feet
tall.

HOOP
10 feet above the ground, is the
standard at all levels of the sport.
Consist of rim, net, metal post and
backboard
Full court = 2 hoops
Half court = 1 hoop
RINGS & RIMS AND NETS
RIM - has a pressure release that
allows it to bend when players dunk.
With 18-inch diameter and is a
metal ring.
NETS - made of white cords and
measure 18 inches. Made of nylon or
polyester.

SINGLE RIM: most popular

indoor court and used in
organized leagues.
DOUBLE RIM: commonly found
on outdoor courts and are
known to require a bit more
touch when shooting the ball.
BASKETBALL
BALL
it is needed in oder to play the
game
In NBA reference, the ball must
be
between 7.5 to 8.5 pounds
(3.4 to 3.8 kg) per square inch.
with size measures: 29.5
inches or size 7 in
circumference.
Most of the ball today are made
with synthetic materials such as
rubber, polyester, and nylon
combination with leather.
BASKETBBALL JERSEYS
& SHORTS
THE ESSENTIALS
the HIGHLIGHTS; since it is the
player’s identity on the court.
Includes their name at the back
while the numbers are both,
back and front for identification.
Shorts are also essential to
complete the uniform for the
game, with matching color to
their jersey.
BASKETBBALL SHOES
& SOCKS
one of the essentials pieces to
play the sport. Basketball can be
used regular shoes, yet a good
pair of will give you extra grip
and safety while on court.
Socks will help you prevent
friction between your feet and
the shoes, prevent blisters
and/or any other form of wound.
SHOT CLOCKS
refer to the timing device that
displays a countdown of the time
within which the team possessing
the ball must attempt a field goal. If
the time runs out before the team
takes a shot, it is considered a shot
clock VIOLATION.

NBA shot clock lasts 24 secs, and 30

secs in college basketball.
WHISTLE
Referees used this equipment in order
to signal the star or stop, foul, and
timeout of the play. Have been around
for the long time and changed over
time to fit in modern technology. And
also a lot of different types of basketball
whistles.
BENCHES
Bench players are also
known as substitute
players, subs, backups,
reserves, role players, or
simply the bench.
Furthermore, basketball
teams will generally
have 7 to 10 bench
players, which would
also equal a total of 12 to
15 basketball players on
an active roster.
BASKETBALL COURT
This is where the game is played. A basketball court is 91.86ft
long and 49.21ft wide. The total playing area for a court is
4520.43 ft² and 7290.5ft² if run-offs and sidelines are required.
BASKETBALL BALL RACK
own storage for the basketballs on
the court. Made of metal rods and
have wheels at the bottom.

BASKETBALL TOWEL
it is a equipment to quickly wipe
away sweat and get back on court.

CHEST PASS
ONE OF THE MOST BASIC YET COMMONLY USED PASSING
TECHNIQUES IN THE GAME. IT IS USED TO QUICKLY PASS THE BALL
FROM ONE PLAYER TO ANOTHER ON THE OFFENSE. WHEN USING A
CHEST PASS, A PLAYER PASSES THE BALL STARTING FROM THEIR
CHEST, EXTENDS THEIR ARMS, AND PROPELS THE BALL FORWARD
USING BOTH HANDS TOWARDS THEIR TEAMMATE.
Balaquinto | Cagatan | Farase | Hornido |
Manlutac | Pirales |Tipudan

OVERHEAD PASS
MAKES BY THROWING THE BALL
FROM OVER THE TOP OF THEIR
HEAD. THIS PASS GENERALLY
HAS MORE POWER THAN A
TYPICAL CHEST PASS AND CAN
TRAVEL FARTHER DISTANCES.
THE BALL SHOULD LAND AT THE
CHEST AREA OF THE RECEIVING
TEAMMATE.
BASEBALL PASS

THE BALL CAN EITHER TRAVEL

IS A MOVEMENT OF THE BALL, CAUSED BY A PLAYER IN CONTROL,

WHO THROWS OR TAPS THE BALL TO THE FLOOR. IS THE SKILL OF

Manlutac | Pirales |Tipudan
HIGH DRIBBLE

THE HIGH DRIBBLE IS USED WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO MOVE THE
BALL UP THE COURT VERY QUICKLY. TYPICALLY, YOU WILL SEE HIGH
DRIBBLES AFTER STEALS AND DURING FAST-BREAK OPPORTUNITIES.
TO EXECUTE A HIGH DRIBBLE, KEEP YOU TORSO ERECT AND PUSH THE
TOP OF THE BALL FORWARD, WELL AHEAD OF YOUR BODY. THE
BOUNCE OF THE BALL SHOULD REACH ANYWHERE FROM BETWEEN
YOUR UPPER THIGH TO SLIGHTLY ABOVE YOUR WAIST.
Balaquinto | Cagatan | Farase | Hornido |
Manlutac | Pirales |Tipudan
CROSSOVER DRIBBLE

THE USUAL DRIBBLE USED TO DEFLECT THE GUARDING PLAYER IS THE

CROSSOVER DRIBBLE. IT IS CHARACTERIZED BY ONE-HAND
DRIBBLING WHILE PUSHING THE BALL IN FRONT. AFTER WHICH, THE
OFFENSIVE PLAYER WOULD HAVE TO EXPLODE RIGHT THROUGH THE
OPPONENT. WHILE THIS IS GOOD FOR ACHIEVING DISTANCE, IT IS
ALSO PRONE FOR STEALS. TO PROTECT THE BALL, DRIBBLING MUST
BE KEPT LOW AS THE BALL PASSES FROM ONE HAND TO ANOTHER
BETWEEN THE LEGS

THE BETWEEN THE LEGS DRIBBLE IS USED TO GO PAST A DEFENDER

WHO IS OVERPLAYING YOU. IF YOU ARE GOING LEFT BEGIN WITH
RAPID LOW DRIBBLES WITH YOUR RIGHT HAND. TAKE A DEEP STEP
FORWARD WITH YOUR LEFT FOOT AND FLICK THE BALL THROUGH
YOUR LEGS TO YOUR LEFT HAND. KEEP YOUR BODY LOW AS YOU MOVE
FORWARD TO YOUR LEFT.
BEHIND THE BACK

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE DIRECTIONS WHILE KEEPING A GOOD VIEW OF THE

ENTIRE COURT, A BEHIND THE BACK DRIBBLE CAN BE EFFECTIVE. IF YOU WANT
TO MOVE TO YOUR LEFT, BEGIN DRIBBLING WITH YOUR RIGHT HAND. EXECUTE
THIS DRIBBLE YOU NEED TO PLACE YOUR HAND ON THE SIDE OF THE BALL. STEP
FORWARD WITH YOUR LEFT FOOT WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY WRAPPING THE
BALL BEHIND YOUR BACK, ACROSS THE BACK OF YOUR THIGHS, AND FLICK THE
BALL TOWARD YOUR LEFT HAND. BE SURE TO PLANT YOUR RIGHT FOOT BEFORE
STEPPING FORWARD WITH YOUR LEFT FOOT.

THREE-POINTS SHOT
LAY UPS
THE MOST BASIC SHOT TYPE IN BASKETBALL. THE PLAYER
APPROACH THE BASKET AND LIGHTLY BOUNCE THE BALL OFF THE
BACKBOARD.
WHEN PERFORMING A LAYUP, YOU CAN PICK EITHER THE LEFT OR
RIGHT SIDE. USUALLY USED IN FINISHING A SET/GAMEPLAY
FINGER ROLL IS A KIND OF LAYUP THAT DOESN'T USE THE
BACKBOARD BECAUSE THE BALL ROLLS DIRECTLY INTO THE BASKET

ALLEY-OOP

SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING PASSES IN THE GAME OF

BASKETBALL, AND ARE A GREAT WAY TO EXERT ONE'S DOMINANCE
OVER THEIR OPPONENT. AN ALLEY OOP PASS CONSISTS OF
THROWING THE BALL UP TO A TEAMMATE NEAR THE HOOP, WHO
TEN WILL PROCEED TO DUNK OR LAY UP THE BALL IN ORDER TO
SCORE. THESE PASSES ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO EXECUTE,
AND ARE MOST COMMONLY SEEN IN PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL.

BLOCKING

IT OCCURS WHEN THE

OFFENSIVE PLAYER SHOOTS AND
THE DEFENDER SWATS THE BALL
AWAY, BLOCKING ITS
TRAJECTORY TO THE BASKET AND
PREVENTING ANY POINTS FROM
BEING SCORED.
STEALING

WAY OF TAKING THE BALL AWAY FROM AN OPPOSING

PLAYER TO GAIN POSSESSION FOR YOUR OWN TEAM,
REQUIRES QUICK HANDS AND GREAT TIMING.
A PLAYER CAN STEAL A PASS OUT OF MIDAIR OR FROM
THE OTHER TEAM WHILE SOMEONE IS DRIBBLING.
