HISTORY
VS
a game played by two teams of usually five players each on a rectangular court having a raised
basket or goal at each end, player must shoot the ball to their respective basket to gain points.
— The core objective in a basketball game is to score points by putting the ball inside the hoop
(basket) and to prevent the opposing team from doing the same.
— The sport spread from the YMCA to colleges where the first basketball leagues were formed.
— Nets used by athletes to dunk the ball and score points in the beloved game of basketball evolved from peaches, or
rather the baskets used to collect peaches.
— The peach baskets were used until 1906 when they were finally replaced by metal hoops with backboards.
— In 1894 the soccer ball was replaced by a ball Naismith contacted A. G Spalding to make.
But it was Tony Hinkle in the late 1950’s who searched and introduced the orange ball that would be more visible to
the players what were used up until now.
WHERE WAS IT ORIGINATED?
In 1891, it was invented by James Naismith in Springfield College, Massachusetts, an instructor and graduate student.
And later on called as “The Father of Basketball.”
The Canadian-American P.E instructor began his invention as a less injury-prone sport than football.
Naismith was a 31-year old graduate student when he created the indoor sport to keep athletes indoors during the
winters.
Luther Halsey Gulick, superintendent of physical education at the College during that time had stressed the need for a
new indoor game, one “that would be interesting, easy to learn, and easy to play in the winter and by artificial light.”
The Faculty and Luther then discussed in the meeting what should they do and Naismith had to expressed his opinion
and said “the trouble is not with the men, but with the system that we are using.” He then added “should be of a
recreative nature, something that would appeal to their play instincts.”
After a while, The first public basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.[2]
The game became established fairly quickly and grew very popular as the 20th
century progressed, first in America and then in other parts of the world.
High schools and colleges began to introduce the new game, and by
1905, basketball was officially recognized as a permanent winter sport.
