I. Background Information for Learners

The government provides good facilities and services not only in the community but also in school.
School health refers to a state of complete physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity among pupils, teachers and other school personnel.
School health service refers to need based comprehensive service rendered to pupils, teachers and
other personnel in the school to promote, protect their health, prevent and control disease and maintain their
health. The ultimate aim of school health services is to promote, protect and maintain health of school children
and reduce morbidity and mortality in them.
The objectives of school health service are the promotion of positive health, the prevention of diseases,
early diagnosis, treatment and follow up of defects, awakening health consciousness in children and the
provision of healthful environment.
School health service refers the needs in the school to promote, protect their health, prevent and control
disease and maintain their health.

1. The School Principal- ensures that school health programme has the approval and support of school
administrative authority. He/she setup a school health committee/school health council to work out the school
health plan and plan for its implementation.
2. The School Teacher- conducts daily inspection of children for personal hygiene and cleanliness.
3. The Community- participates in school health committees or councils and contribute in formulation of
school health policies and plan, and motivating parents to send their children to school and take care of their
health.
4. The Children- learn values of medical and health examinations, personal hygiene, good nutrition,
environmental sanitation etc.
5. The Medical Officer- conducts medical examination of the students, making diagnosis, prescribing
treatment and making referral to specialists.
6. The School Health Nurse- responsible for comprehensive health of the child. She takes care of all the
factors which influence the health of the child.
