INTRODUCTION
• The school environment has been described as one of the unique setting for children and adolescents to learn and to
live, as well as offering resources for promoting their health and development.
• School health program as one of the strategies for promoting primary health care services in the school community
to keep them in a state of complete, physical, mental and social well being.
• School Health Programme refers to all the aspects of the total school programme which contribute to the
understanding, maintenance and improvement of the health of the population.
• It consists of three main areas namely school health services, school health education and school health
environment and school nutrition programme. 3

Comprehensive care for the health and well being of all children.
• Promotion of positive health

• Prevention of disease

• Early diagnosis, treatment and followup of detects.

• Awakening health consciousness in children

• Provision of healthful environment

HEALTH EDUCATION
• Health education is part of the school health services activities. - Groups and individual

health education.
• Health education in group is carried out through health education campaign or health

camp in the school. Students can acquire knowledge through exhibitions, lectures and

demonstrations by health personnel.


• Individual health education - given as advice and counselling during medical examination

session. Common issues are those related to diet, skin diseases, and personal hygiene.

ROLE OF COMMUNITY NURSE IN SCHOOL HEALTH
PROGRAM
• As a vital member of the school health team, the nurse participates in planning and
coordinating health programs.
• The nurse serves as a school health consultant, offering expertise in health related matters.
• Overseeing the establishment and maintenance of a safe and healthful environment within
the school setting.
• Demonstrating proper techniques for teacher health inspections and related procedures.
• Assisting in screening physical, mental and special examinations of school children.
• Contributing to communicable disease control efforts.

IMPLICATONS
• Learning environment in schools will not improve
• Parents and teachers will not be aware of the prevalence of various ailments and disorders
among the children, which affect their learning, & can be treated at early stages.
• A number of children will face difficulty in their studies due to physical disorders, and may
leave the school without knowing nature of their health problem.
• A considerable proportion of children will remain malnourished, particularly from
disadvantaged groups, and their smooth physical and mental growth will be inhibited.
• Children and their parents, particularly in rural areas, will be more vulnerable to various
diseases and infections.

6. Higher drop out rate will lead to wastage of resources and will negatively affect
efficiency of education system.
7. Overall health indicators among next generations will remain low.
8. Social and economic disparities among different segments of the society will
widen.

VENUE : TADIKA SHAN TAO AND TADIKA ST FRANCIS COVENT
ENROLMENT : TADIKA SHAN TAO (2 CLASSES – 68 STUDENT) AND TADIKA ST FRANCIS
COVENT (2 CLASSES – 73 STUDENT)
STAFF INVOLVED : 2 STAFF FROM HEALTH SCHOOL TEAM (PKS, PKK KK) AND 4 STUDENT
(BACHELOR’S IN PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING)

INTRODUCTION
• Young children are prone to many diseases. In the developing countries, where health
services for the general public are poor and overall knowledge about health care is low,
parents and teachers are unable to detect health problem of children which impede their
learning as well.
• Provision of health services to the children and young students in following forms fall
under this category :
a)Health screening (medical check up) of students on regular basis
b)Referral of students with health problems to medical centres for treatment or
rehabilitation
c)De-worming campaigns.

Prevention of illness as well as the promotion of health and well being of the students
through :
• Early detection and care of students with health problems
• To perform health screening of school children
• Development of healthy attitudes and healthy behaviours by students
• Ensure a healthy environment for children at school

CONCLUSION
Health education is a significant addition to the curricula of school because health is a source of
major concern. Increasing awareness among the student body can reduce the risk of educational
disruptions.

School health services are offered to the student so that they can attain a healthy living including
physical examination, treatment of minor aliment and common disease. School health services are
essential part need to be look after to improve health status of school children. Abnormal cases
were referred to near health centres.
