CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background and Rationale

Mobile legends: Bang Bang is a multiplayer online battle arena


(MOBA) game designed for mobile phones Positive effects of Mobile
Legends improving brain functions and educating children. Negative
effects of Mobile Legend distraction while performing another important
activity, affecting social interaction, sleep problems and loss of productivity.

Online games influence Filipino students in many ways. According to


Jana (2020) playing online games for long hours can affect the student’s
performance in school. Studies have shown that a higher amount of time
spent on playing onscreen games can be associated with lower academic
performance. A survey has shown that 47% of heavy online players got
poor grades, while 23% of the light users performed better than them.
However, some study said it enhances the student creativity and critical
thinking. The action in the online games prepares the gamers to make
smart decisions in split seconds. Furthermore, they need acute attention to
cope with unexpected changes in the game.

According to Bautista (2019) Mobile Legend: Bang bang can


actually help the players to improve different skills that can be used in real
life situations. Strategic thinking, critical thinking, and multitasking skills are
the best examples of the skills that can be developed and nurtured while
playing Mobile Legend: Bang bang. Achieving the victory is the primary
objective of this game. Preparing a good plan design using the ideas in
your head can really be a good help to achieve it. Together with
teammates connected by a server, the game also promotes teamwork and
social connectivity.

According to Tumbokon (2020). Academic achievement may be


negatively related to the over-all time spent playing video games. The
study found out that the student online game addicts argue a lot with their
teachers, fight a lot with their friends, and their grade is lower than the
students who play online game less often. Some students admitted that
used to skip their homework just to play the game.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether playing Mobile


Legends games has a noticeable impact on students’ academic
performance. The researcher also wanted to know the relationship
between a student academic performance and playing Mobile Legends
and to understand the reason behind students’ addiction in playing Mobile
Legends. The main focus of this study is to avoid game addiction and
prevent students to their hubby in playing Mobile Legends.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study sought to answer the following research questions:


1. What are the effects of Playing Mobile Legends on students’
academic performance?

2. Is there a significant relationship between student’s


academic performance and playing Mobile Legends?

3. What motivates student to play Mobile Legends?

• Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to identify The Effect of


Mobile Legends on the academic performance of Students at
Initao Senior High School. Specifically, this study aims to:
1. To determine whether playing mobile legend games has a
noticeable impact on student’s academic performance.

2. To know the relationship between a student’s academic


performance and playing Mobile Legends.
3. To understand the reason behind students’ addiction in
playing Mobile Legends. The main focus of this study is to
avoid game addiction and prevent students to their hubby in
Playing Mobile Legends.

1.3 Significance of the Study

This study provides the effects of Mobile Legend to the academic


performance of students at Initao Senior High School.

The primary beneficiaries of this study are the following :

To the Teachers. Teachers could help students improve their


academic performance by teaching them lessons on the subject they were
handling as well as teaching them about possible side effects of game
addiction so that the students would be aware of what they were doing.
With the information they would learn from the study, they could give their
students the proper attention regarding the impact of Mobile Legends on
academic performance of the student.

To the Students. To avoid being addicted to Mobile Legends and to


focus on academics to improve their academic performance.

To the Parents. The outcome of the study will help the parents to
give awareness to their child in controlling themselves on playing online
games specifically in Mobile Legends and eventually help them to
appreciate enough academics.

Future Researchers. This would help the future researchers that


are interested in this study. This will serve as their background about their
research.

1.4 Scope and delimitation


This study are only focused on the cause and effects of playing

Mobile Legends in the academic performance of Senior High School

Students of Initao National Comprehensive High School.The primary

subjects of this research study will consist of the Grade 11 students

enrolled in school year 2022-2023.The respondents will be limited ten (10)

Grade 11 students who are in the HUMSS and TVL-A sections of Initao

Senior High School of INCHS.

1.5 Definition of terms

Mobile Legend- is a listed in the category (Action). It is highly

ranked in several countries, and us also one of the most popular apps in

Goggle Play with more than 100 million installs.

Academic- academic is used to describe things that relate to the

work done in schools, colleges, and universities, especially work which

involves studying and reasoning rather than practical or technical skills.

Battle- fight or struggle tenaciously to achieve or resist something.

Game- a form of play or sport, especially a competitive one played

according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck.

MOBA- Multiplayer Online Battle Arena.


Interaction- Communication or direct involvement with someone or

something.

Mobile- Relating to mobile phone, handheld computers, and similar

technology.

Online- Controlled by or connected to another computer or to a

network.

Teamwork- The combined action of a group of people, especially

when effective and efficient.

TVL- Technical Vocational Livelihood.

HUMMS- Humanities and Social Science.
