The background The challenge

Cornish Concrete Products Limited, located in
Bissoe near Truro, is surrounded by vast
quantities of the waste product from the China
Clay industry. This product – granite – is
washed and graded to provide secondary
coarse and fine aggregate for inclusion in its
concrete manufacture process. As with all
natural materials, the aggregate has its own
unique physical and chemical properties,
which have to be accounted for in the final
concrete mix design.
Cornish Concrete Products’ components are
manufactured with ‘ecocrete’ environmentally
friendly concrete, which contains a minimum
of 80% secondary aggregates.
The local granites used generally have a high
water demand and a coarse surface texture,
which poses a challenge – firstly, when the
concrete has to be transported across the
yard to point of placing (segregation) and,
secondly, next day in the stripping of the
moulds (early strength development).

Our solution
To overcome the difficulties of segregation and strength
development, Cornish Concrete Limited incorporated
MasterMatrix 233 superplasticiser and, where needed,
MasterSet AC 555 accelerator into the concrete mix.
MasterMatrix 233 is a blend of PCE polymer superplasticizer and
a viscosity modifying agent, which allows for a degree of
robustness and resistance to segregation whilst still permitting a
fluid mix which would not be achievable with a standard PCE
superplasticizer. The water reduction achieved allows for the
production of high strength C60 concrete.
MasterSet AC 555 accelerator is used where next-day lifting
strengths are required in colder temperatures and when cement
replacements are used.
