The rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCD) and mental health
conditions constitute a major public health challenge in Pakistan that has a serious negative impact on social and economic development. Pakistan was among the few countries in the world, delineating the National Action Plan for prevention and control of NCD1 but overlooked true implementation and delivering results. For the first time, the burden of NCD and Injuries, in terms of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), is reported to be around 50.1% of the total burden of disease in 2019, surpassing the burden of RMNCH and communicable diseases (49.9%). The transition towards NCD and Injuries is more prominent in Punjab (53.2%), Azad Jammu & Kashmir (64.7%), and Islamabad (68.7%).
