NEWTON LAWS OF

MOTION
MRS. CASSANDREA COLE-BERNARD
OBJECTIVES
•Understand the newton three laws of motion
•Define the term lever
•Identify the functions of lever
•Explain the three classes of lever and their turning effect
NEWTON LAWS OF MOTION
• Principles of motion was discovered over 300 years ago by sir isaac newton who
worked in many areas of mathematics and physics.

•Newton stated that there are three laws of motion which can be applied to sport
performance.
•1st law of motion (law of inertia)
•2nd law of motion (law of acceleration)
•3rd law of motion (law of reaction)
LAW OF INERTIA

• “ A BODY CONTINUES IN ITS STATE OF MOTION

OR UNIFORM REST UNLESS A FORCE ACTS ON IT.”
LAW OF INERTIA
LAW OF ACCELERATION

• “ THE ACCELERATION OF AN OBJECT IS DIRECTLY

PROPORTIONAL TO THE FORCE AND INVERSELY
PROPORTIONAL TO THE MASS OF THE OBJECT.”

• FORCE = MASS * ACCELERATION

LAW OF ACCELERATION
LAW OF REACTION

• “ FOR EVERY ACTION THERE IS AN EQUAL AND

OPPOSITE REACTION. “
Law of Reaction

Lever
•What comes to you mind when you think of a lever?
Lever
•According to Honeybourne et. al (2002) a lever is defined as a rigid bar that
rotates about an fixed point (fulcrum).
•Force (effort) applied to the lever will move the load/ resistance.
Function of lever

• To overcome a larger load than the effort applied,

• To increase the distance of a load by using a greater effort.

Classification of lever
• In the human body, the bone acts as the rigid bar; the joint is the axis, or
fulcrum; and the muscles apply force.
• There are three (3) class lever;
• First class lever
• Second class lever
• Third class lever
Classification of Lever
First class lever

• The acronym F L E can be used to understand how each class works.

• In the first class lever the Fulcrum is between the effort and the load.
• With a first-class lever, the applied force and resistance may be at equal distances
from the axis, or one may be farther away from the axis than the other
Example: Scissor, seesaw, the movement of the head
Classification of Lever
Second class lever

• The load lies between the fulcrum and the efforts.

Example: Wheelbarrow, nutcracker and when you raise on your toes. ( plantar flexion).
Classification of Lever
Third class lever

• The effort lies between the fulcrum and the resistance.

Example: canoe paddle, shovel and elbow flexion

Force
• A force is simply define as a push or a pull (Hall, 2012).
• Forces can be used to make something move, stop something that is already
moving or to prevent something from moving altogether.
Force
There are two types of force;
1. Internal force- forces that act within the objector system whose motion is
being investigated. eg. muscles
2. External force- forces that act on an object as a result of its interaction
with the environment. eg. weight of an object
