PURPOSE OF THE PORTFOLIO

This portfolio is the compilation of my Field Study 1 which focused in “The Learner’s

Development and Environment.”

One main purpose in making this portfolio is to record what I have observed for the past weeks

at Abuyog National High School. This will help me handle my student-to-be, hopefully in the future.

This will also guide me on how to handle different types of learners and learning activities considering

their individual differences and different needs. The portfolio will as well help me know the strategies I

should employ in teaching high school students. This will facilitate me know the best way the students

learn best. This may aid me in managing my future classroom and what roles I am going to portray when

I am already in the field of teaching.

different characteristic when it comes to learning. They are all willing to finish their studies and love to
socialize with their fellow schoolmates. Despite of their differences in learning, they all show common
interests and needs. They learn in their own way with the guide of the teacher. I think these students will
learn best if they were given opportunities to enhance their respective skills and talents and be more
participative in class discussion and indulge their selves in some school activities that could boosts their
self-confidence.

If given a chance to be a professional teacher someday, time will come that I will be dealing these
kinds of individuals and as a teacher, I should learn more strategies that I will use during class
discussions for my students to learn their different characteristics and needs when it comes to learning
and through these, I will know where I should focus with. Learners have multiple intelligences that must
be enhance and it is in the teachers hand to guide them. To all aspiring teachers, these are great
challenges that we are going to face when the right time comes when we are successful in our field. A
teacher must always be ready.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND LEARNING

Target Competency

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment 20

At the end of this activity, you be able to acquire better understanding of time, space, and
material resource management in providing an environment conducive of learning.

Specific Tasks

1. Observe a class.
2. Using a checklist, find out if the important components of classroom management are evident.
3. Describe the general behavior of the learners in the class during the learning activities.
4. Relate the data in your checklist to the learner’s behavior.
5. Reflect on how classroom management affects learning.

Write your observation on how your resource teacher demonstrated the four component of
classroom management.

1. Setting up rules

- The cleanliness of the classroom bust be observed and maintained

- Observed silent
- Respect one another

2. Devising consequences for when rules are violated

- She doesn’t impose fines or punishment whenever these rules are violated but she scolds
them every time her student violated the rules.

3. Catching them being good.

When the student behave or does something good, the teacher immediately recognized the
students’ efforts by praising them and setting them as a good example to the class. In that way,
the student are encourage to do good for their efforts are not taken for granted.

4. Being consistent.

Aside from the praises the students get when they do good, when the teacher realizes all their
efforts to be consistent she gives additional points that motivates more the student.

Describe the general behavior of the learner in the class.

They are fond of making unnecessary noise during or after classes. Even if their teacher is around.
The learners tend to attend business on their own and managed to study when there is a quiz to be given
to them. The students are sometimes participative and passive during class discussions. There are also
students who are making fond of noises when the class is ongoing and there are few students who like

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment 21

chitchatting with new issues about their school. They finished the tasks given to them on time and they
maintained the cleanliness of their classroom.

Why is classroom management an integral part of the teaching and learning process?

Classroom management is very significant when it comes to teaching learning and learning process
because learning cannot take place unless the classroom is well manage and conducive to the learner. It
is an integral part of the teaching and learning process because it plays vital role for teacher and learners.
Without classroom management, the teaching and learning process will be poor and the learner will not
learn best. The classroom must be conducive and provides a democratic atmosphere so that the students
will feel comfortable whenever the class is ongoing. We can’t teach our learners with poor classroom
management. Classroom management is not all about behavior of the learners; it is also about the room
itself, the tables and chairs, desk, and different instructional materials to be used allowing them to have
an effective teaching and learning process.

LEARNERS’ CHARACTERISTICS AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Target Competency

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment 22

At the end of this activity, you should be able to acknowledge the diversity of learners when
providing learning opportunities.

Specific Tasks

1. Observe a class on a regular recitation day.

2. Describe the characteristics of the learners in the class.
3. Enumerate and describe the activities that took place.

Describe the general characteristic of the learners in class.

Based on my observation, I’ve observed most of the learners in class were of average level in
terms of their learning. There are few learners were participative and some are passive. Although not
everybody is willing to recite or attend the class discussion, the learner can answer the teacher’s
question each time they call them. At least they have the ideas and thoughts on their minds.

There are slow learners were motivated to be more participative during class discussion because
their teacher provided them with good strategies to aid their needs and interests in class. It helps because
somehow, they are doing hard works in their own way and to catch up with the rest of the group and it is
due to the teachers’ that handle them.

List down activities on how your resources teacher facilitated the learning process to diverse
learners.

When the class began, the teacher conducts a little review or recapitulation of their previous topic
they had. The teacher calls learners randomly from the class. The teacher calls on both boys and girls.
Since they began the class discussion, interaction takes place since the teacher encourages the learners to
recite and attend attentively by being nice to them with authority tone.

The teacher asked questions repeatedly until the learner can comprehend and understand the
teacher’s question as there are few learners are slow. The teacher even talks to the learner acting as the
second parent of the learner to encourage and motivate them to do good in class hours. The teacher
promotes democratic atmosphere enable for the learners to be more comfortable when the class is
ongoing.

What strategies were adopted by your resources teacher to address the names of differently-able
students?

The teacher adopts an inductive method which is from specific to general. The teacher does not

thoroughly to the questions that guides them to the lesson proper. The learners are the one to discover
what their lessons are all about. The teacher asked questions repeatedly until such time the learner can
absorb and understand fully their topics.

At the end of this activity, you should be able to determine various teaching approaches and

Specific Tasks

1. Observe a class on a regular recitation day.

2. Tell how the activities facilitated learning considering the learners’ varied characteristics.

Write down how the activities facilitated learning considering the learners’ varied characteristics.

The teacher has this aura that draws the learners to listen and participate to the class discussions
and keeping them from making unnecessary noises.

Based on my observation, during the class discussion, the learners are participative and attend their
own businesses as their teacher gives them activities. They raised their hand instead in answering in
chorus. They do not talk to their seatmate that would distract the whole class. Instead, they attend to
their own note and answer when they are called and asked about the topic. To the class, they are able to
answer the questions given by their teacher due to they are very attentive to the class discussion.

When the teacher gives them group activities, they showed the same interest during individual
recitation. Each member of the group participated well along with the given activity. Through the group
activity, the learner learned best and fast and thus performs well and come up with a good result.

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND THE LEARNING PROCESS

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment 26

Target Competency

At the end of this activity, you will be able to understand and accept the learners’ diverse
background.

Specific Tasks

1. Select and interview some learner in the class to gather their background information.
2. Observe them as they participate in a classroom activity.
3. Write a narrative report.

Lit down individual differences you observed among the selected learner in the class.

The first learner that I had interviewed and observed the learner was very active in class discussion,
I can describe the learner as fast learner and the learner is fond of reading books and very much attentive
during the class discussion. The first learner learned through listening to the teacher so when the teacher
asked questions the learner always raised hand to answer.

The second learner is also participative and but sometime quiet during the class discussion proper. I
as well considered the second learner as fast learner; The second learner loves reciting during English
subject and is always eager to answer in board. But when the teacher is already out, the second learner is
fond of making unnecessary noise and the learner is sometimes mischievous.

Suggest appropriate adjustment for learners of diverse background

The teacher was good and well mastered with the lesson given to the class. There is just some little
suggestion that somehow could help the teacher in the future class. The teacher should give more
effective and efficient strategies to the learners. The teacher must know how to give chance to other
learners during the class discussion. The teacher must not focus on fast learner rather call the attention of
those slow learners and encourage them to be more active in class activities. A surprise and random
recitation is a nice strategy for teachers to make learners more participative in the class.

Providing an individual recitation to learners is one way of expressing the learners’ opinions and their
opportunities to hear their ideas when the class is ongoing. The teacher must be fair and square in all

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND THE LEARNING PROCESS

Target Competency

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment 28

At the end of this activity, you are expected to relate the learners’ background to their
performance in the classroom.

Specific Tasks

1. Interview two students to gather their background information.

2. Observe them as they participate in a classroom activity.
3. Write a narrative report.

Write a narrative report on how two learners’ background affect their performance in the
classroom.

Every human being is different and unique. We vary our differences in Gardner’s Multiple
Intelligence. During my interview to the two learners, I came up to a conclusion that each individual is
different and possessed unique skills, abilities and talents when it comes to school activities and class
activities. The first learner that I interviewed was an only child but he is a fast learner. He is punctual
and went to school promptly but there are times he is naughty and mischievous towards to his
classmates. His mother is an elementary teacher. I think being an only child affects his behavior and
performance in school since he is just an only child; he needs full attention that’s why sometimes he is
troublesome. Being only child is quite a problem to him for he has no playmates when he is in their
house. He is talkative in class but can answer question when called by his teachers.

The second learner I interviewed is a third child in their family. She came from an average family.
Her father worked abroad to sustain their living while her mother is working in a government office. She
is intelligent and belongs to top students in their class. She loves hanging out with friend and doing
some group studies. She is fond of reading technological books and sometimes does some investigatory
studies. She is one of the school top students. She is very participative in class discussions and helpful to
her classmates. She is sometimes emotional when left behind the class discussion but can catch up
easily.

HOME-SCHOOL LINK
Target Competency

At the end of this activity, you are expected to reflect on the impact of home and family life to
learning.

Specific Tasks

1. Select a learner from the class that you have observed.

2. Conduct a home visit to your selected learner.
3. Describe the family and home environment of the learner.
4. Interview the parents/guardians/relatives/peers on the learner’s activities and behavior while at
home.

Describe the family and home environment of the learner including his/her activities and behavior
while at home.

The performance of the learner in school is also affected by the types of environment they have at
home. For instance, the learner that I had interviewed want her to finished her studies on time and don’t
take education for granted because this is just the wealth that can’t be given by others. The parent of the
learner is slightly strict when it comes to the performance of their child. They always gave their child a
wisdom quote to let their child realize that education is very important. The parents help their child in
making projects as well as help in assignment when their child doesn’t understand them. The parents
allowed their child to unwind and hang out with friends. But always reminding their child to make study
a priority one.

Write a reflection on how home and family life impact on learning.

Home and family life plays an important role when it comes on learning process. It is where
learning takes place first. Our parents are there to guide us and support us in all aspects of life. Home is
a place where each learner can study alone with good ambience and our family as well helps us
motivates and be more courageous in finishing our studies. They took a big impact on learning because
the learners will not be at school without the guide of its family. We learned everywhere. Learning is
everywhere and thus takes place when the learners activate it by him alone.

Suggest classroom activities that are meaningfully linked to the experience and aspirations of the
learners in their homes.

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment 30

A group activity that is related to the life of a man to the community as well as in their homes. This
is I think a good suggestion for classroom activities that are meaningfully linked to the experience and
aspirations of the learners. A collaborative learning process will help learners to come up with fast and
effective result. Through sharing of their ideas about their experiences in the community the learners
will be at their best and is more confident in making the activity done in a matter of time.

Another is to have a community service such us cleaning the community chapel and by beautifying
the school as well as the town’s park. This will help learners to be more open to the community and
allowing them to be more conscious about their surroundings that could affect their lives.

PERCEIVED ROLES OF A TEACHER

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment 31
Target Competency

At the end of this activity, you should have acquired a better understanding of the learning
process and the role of the teacher in facilitating these processes in their classes.

Specific Tasks

Interview the resource teacher who handled the class that you have observed.

Write your reflection on the significant roles of teachers in the learning process.

The role of a teacher today is much different than it used to be. Teacher's used to be told what to
teach, and how to teach it. They were expected to use the same methods for all students. In today's world
of education, a teacher's role is quite multifaceted. Their job is to counsel students, help them learn how
to use their knowledge, and integrate it into their lives so they will be valuable member of society.
Teachers are encouraged to really tune into how each individual student learns, and try to really
challenge and inspire them to learn.

In the classroom, the teacher can assume various roles to teach what they want; they can be our
prime mover, controller, observer, prompter, tutor, assessor, organizer, a good resource and a like.

I remember way back to my primary school days, one of my teachers kept on telling u that she was
our second mother and so we should always respect and obey her. I think she was right. That the role of
teachers doesn’t just end with teaching and facilitating students in terms of academic performances. I
think we still have hold on to them in terms of emotional aspects because they were always there for us
whenever we encountered flaws. The role of a teacher doesn’t end on the concerns of the classroom and
learners. It extends outside the school as well as to the community.

Target Competency

At the end of this activity, you should be able to identify and enumerate the roles of the teacher
in the learning process.

Specific Tasks

Interview the resource teacher who handled the class that you have observed.

Based on the interview with your resource teacher, list down the teaching activities s/he performed
to facilitate learning. Classify these teaching activities according to the major role s/he plays in the
learning process.

To achieve the goal of teaching, the teacher must adopt effective teaching methods. The teacher
has lots of choices to choose from, various techniques, intended purposely for teaching and learning.
Writing lesson plans is a chief thing that a teacher must do, ahead of executing any teaching strategy in
the class. The teaching method should be adopted on the root of certain criteria like the knowledge of
the learners, the environment, and the set of learning goals decided in the academic course.

The resource teacher I had observed used various teaching activities to facilitate learning such as
questioning, explaining, modeling, and demonstrating as well as collaborating activities. The teacher is
very fluent and has mastery on the lesson he is going to discussed. The student can easily catch up to
their teacher and they come up with an interaction which makes the learning process more fun.

PERCEIVED ROLES OF A TEACHER

Target Competency

At the end of this activity, you are expected to accept personal accountability for your learners’
achievement and performance.

Specific Tasks

Interview the resource teacher who handled the class that you have observed.

Based on the interview with your resource teacher, how do learners’ achievement and
performance impact on his/her professional and personal life?

The old saying goes that “teachers is our second mother”, that is right. Teachers are the second
mother of the learners. Teachers should treat his/her students like his/her own and by providing them a
just and fair when it comes to academic performances. Respecting our learners’ opinion and their lives
will also affect the teachers’ behavior towards them. Respect their rights as a learner so that they may
become law-abiding citizens in the society we are living.

Outside the school the role of the teacher is to reach to the parent of his/her learner and to the whole
community. In general, the roles of the teachers can be compared to a potter, the learners are the clay.
Teachers should tell their learners to become a better person, begin to be productive and God fearing
citizens in the future.

Personal Reflection
For the past weeks I’ve stayed in Abuyog National High School as an observer I realized that

being a teacher is not an easy profession. I noticed as well that classroom management is very important

in teaching – learning process. Once the class becomes unruly, teaching is impossible and so it is very

significant that we first should manage our classroom well before proceeding to class discussion proper.

See to it that our classroom is conducive to the learners. Lack of classroom management may develop

disrespect and uncomfortable to the students that tends them not to do well in class.

Teaching Strategies play a vital role in teaching too. Even if there are slow learners in the class,

the strategies used by the teacher can also motivate slow learner to catch up with the rest of the group. In

teaching we should also consider the individual differences of our student and their different needs and

interests and learning characteristics too of our learners. It is wise that we use the strategies and

activities that would fit to their needs and interests.

Our role as a teacher does not end in school. We can conduct a home visitation and talk to the

parent to fully understand our learners. They can explain further the behaviors of their children shows.

This way, we can handle or deal with them better. The school must cater social, psychological and

physical environment that promotes learning. A safe, clean and orderly school is good for teaching

learning process. Teacher is not an easy job, it takes dedication and passion. Teaching indeed is the

noblest profession. Teachers have abilities to turn students from nothing into great something.

This portfolio will serve as my remembrance during my Field Study 1 observation. This will also

remind me on how teaching – learning process takes place does and will surely help me on my future

endeavors.
